SpeedEditor: often it doesn't link DRS at the start

PostFri Mar 29, 2024 3:15 pm

I have an issue that was accentuated on 18.6.6 however I would like to know what's causing it.

Often when I start DRS, the Speed Editor doesn't turn on. No way to disconnect and reconnect the USB cable or the blue tooth.
I have to restart DRS

BUt also by restarting, sometimes I get some control working other not.
For instance: Split, Stop/Play and all buttons are working, BUT the jog wheel. but after long time: it starts working back again :-/

What can cause this please?

As habit I always touch a few Speed Editor buttons several times before starting Resolve. Not sure if this just " wakes up " or what but seems to work for me.

I have mine connected by cable as it was always flakey with Bluetooth. It always starts during Resolve's startup splash screens and I never have to wake it up. If you are using it cabled try a different USB port or another cable.

Hi Charles

yes I tried also without BT.

the only one USB port standard C is the one I use with the Speed Editor. It's constantly connected there.
But I still have issues with the Speed Editor

Interestingly I had the same problem for a couple of months. I'm on a Mac. Then I checked the bluetooth settings which said the SE was not connected. I pushed the "connect" button and it found it straight away and now the SE starts automatically as soon as DR opens, as it always used to. There have been several mac updates so maybe that changed something. I feel for Windows users with the constant changes of drivers, etc. NO, don't start a flame war :)

One thing you can try is setting the USB Root Hubs in Device Manager to not turn off.
In Control Panel/USB Root Hub/Properties/ Power Management, make sure it is unchecked.

I have my Speed Editor connected with cable to my PC and Bluetooth to Mac. Works fine this way as long as both are not on at the same time. However if I need to use with the iPad the Mac needs to be off otherwise of course it can only pair with one device at a time. To avoid confusion I usually unpair Studio Max if I am going to use the iPad in the house. I do this to check HDR on my TV used as clean feed from the iPad.

On Bluetooth I do a firm press of shuttle and scroll buttons simultaneously while Resolve is booting/booted.
Typically a second or two later the Speed editor is ready to go with the Jog button lit.

Apparently you can also reset the SE by plugging in by USB and pressing in/out and source/ timeline buttons simultaneous. (4 buttons) to a count of 5.

I would also check to make sure you have a good usb cable. A lot of usb cables are not of great quality and not even to the basic usb3 spec.
My got to these days is a fully rated usb-c 4 cable , thunderbolt 3/4, 8k video, and 100Wpower delivery. I am slowly throwing out all of the less capable cables because too many of them seem to fail. I just make sure to clearly label my new cables to avoid confusion.

Try moving your cell phone away from the SE. Signal interference could be a thing, though unlikely.

The strange thing I noticed now, while I perfumed what you suggested, is that I get this error from Windows, while (in this moment) the SPeed Editor is even working fine.

There are no separate drivers to install for the Speed Editor, you just plug it in. With DaVinci Resolve Control Panels installed you access it for updates via the Help dropdown menu and clicking on DaVinci Control Panels Setup.
It's worth noting that the Speed Editor needs to be using a USB 3 port when connected by cable.
Further information can be found in the 18.6 Reference Manual starting at page 956.

Except that the Control Panel was uninstalled under suggestion of BM due an issue (I have made a post here) that made DRS crash at the start. It seems something conflicting with some Windows update but BM still looking for the cause. Indeed it's a known bug but it occurs quire rarely and they have difficulties to get it fixed.
