Nasty rendering bug with new UltraNR

PostSat Apr 13, 2024 9:41 pm

Running some of the new features through my usual test scene and noticed that UltraNR, at least on my system (i9K + RTX4080), has a nasty rendering bug with highly saturated colors:

Of course, LEDs are a torture test, but the problem even exists in the orange and to lesser degrees elsewhere in the images

How/when is the noise reduction applied? On native camera log space? Or a conversion prior. Or post grading/display conversion?

I'm saying this because the model may perhaps not play well with negative values but just a wild guess.

Well, step 1 is reproduction. Can we get the frame you have problems with?

I haven't done thorough testing yet, only while using RCM.

Did some quick testing and narrowed it down to RCM and saturation.

Using CST based color management into same working space (Davinci Wide/Intermediate) does not cause the problem.

Tried a few different ways of increasing saturation (primaries, ColorSlice, Mononodes DCTL) all behaved the same: Once a certain saturation is reached, ugly macroblock artifacts.

fwiw, I'm seeing similar artifacts anytime luma or chroma are nonzero in the noise profile settings.

See if anything changed with the latest drivers

NVIDIA Studio Driver
Version: 552.22 WHQL

The April NVIDIA Studio Driver provides optimal support for the latest new creative applications and updates including Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve version 19 and Trimble’s SketchUp 2024. Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve released version 19, adding the IntelliTrack AI point tracker and UltraNR AI-powered features to further streamline video editing workflows.

Those artifacts don't show here on an Intel iMac with a Radeon 580.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Good idea, but alas, the bug persists with 552.22

Yea, I've heard this has a big affect on Resolve's noise reduction! Something to do with the 'Happy' filter?!! lol

Do the artifacts go away if you raise the luma and chroma values in the Noise Profile section?

With my current tests (and the latest NV driver) the artifacts are lessened as I raise those values. Why my footage I can't see any difference in noise reduction when making those changes.
