Playback stops after 2 seconds and 4 frames

PostFri May 10, 2024 9:36 pm

Hi everyone!
New to DaVinci Resolve and I have a question. When I click in to either the Cut or Edit pages with a timeline open, if I then click play (or press L) my video will play for 2 seconds and 4 frames. If I then click play (or L) again, playback continues as expected. This happens even after a restart, every time. This does not happen in Fairlight.

When I click "Play Reverse" there are a few stutters but play does not stop.

Is this an expected behavior?

I am using the latest version of Resolve and I am running Windows 10. It is a fresh install of the software and this is my first project.

Thanks for any answers!

Can you include more information such as Resolve version, computer spec, Audio IO configuration, Timeline Resolution, source media format and codec?

Any DSP intensive processes such as Fairlight Track FX (e.g. Voice Isolation) or VST/AU plugins?

Convert source audio to LPCM and video essence to ProRes or DNxHR, and confirm the issue persists.

No, that's unusual.

Run a test with this media. Report back.

There are 3 clips about 1/4 of the way down the page.

First, Thank you for the time you have spent replying to my problem.

I downloaded the video clips, got them into the media pool and into my project. I created a new timeline and inserted the three clips on the cut page. I opened the Edit page hit the L key and the video started to play, a bit jumpy but it played until the end. I went to the Cut page and it played there as well. I then went back to the Edit page and the playback was smooth (I guess it cached the clips) and played to the end.

It does not seem to exhibit the same stopping after a couple seconds and a few frames with these clips.

If you have any thoughts on this, or more troubleshooting you want me to do please let me know. I'm sorry it takes so long for me to reply but as a new member my posts have to be reviewed by a moderator before they post. I Think "I need training!" :)

So, in researching this myself I have learned that I know nothing about my workflow and how I should be capturing my video. So I am going to spend a little time researching my workflow and I am going to go to the DaVinci Resolve portion of the Forum to post what I am doing and seek some advice from others that know a bit more than I do.

If those clips played a bit jumpy at first, then I'm thinking you might have a resource issue.

You need more powerful hardware. ;)

I think I am going to re-evaluate my whole process. I would like to reinstall windows on this computer and try again.I installed the latest version of Davinci on another computer, an AMD 3800X,32GB RAM, Nvidia RTX-1060 with 6GB Memory and my project ran flawlessly. So the problem is on this computer.

Thank you for your time helping me out. I do appreciate it.

You point out resources, I think you are on to something. I went into BIOS and found that my RAM was not running under it's XMP profile. So I changed that first, rebooted and ran Resolve. My projects play flawlessly now. The raw videos still stutter a little bit toward the end of the three clips but it is better than it was.

I'm going to keep polishing this turd just to make sure I don't have to throw money at a problem that can be solved with a little investigation!!

Thanks again!!

I think I figured it out.

Possible Solution: Go to Preferences Click User at the top. Unselect "Stop playback when a dropped frame is detected.

Again, Thanks for the help and sending me down the correct path to improve my performance.
