Problem with computer configuration

PostTue May 14, 2024 2:32 pm

I bought two new computers and returned both because DaVinci Resolve wasn't working, and it's still not working on the current one.

I've tried both DaVinci 18.6 and the 19 public beta version, but neither work well. The program occasionally stutters, runs slowly, and doesn't keep up. When I press play, the music stutters for a couple of seconds before resuming normally.

Switching between panels, like from edit to color, takes a while for the previews to show up. I've optimized all necessary configurations, but there's been no improvement. While it's performing better than before, the situation hasn't changed significantly.

I currently have an MSI VECTOR GP78HX 13VG-091IY computer with an Intel i7-13700HX, Nvidia RTX 4070 8GB GDDR6, 16GB RAM, and 1TB SSD PCIe.

It seems strange to me that it can't support DaVinci Resolve. Do you have any advice on how I can solve this problem, or should I consider changing my computer because it's not performing well enough?
Thank you

Re: PROBLEM WITH DAVINCI RESOLVE ACTIVATION

Please refrain from shouting (all caps)

Your issue has nothing to do with activation. Resolve is clearly stating but you have some performance issue, likely due to your system configuration.

Try updating the GPU driver for that specific GPU.

If that fails to assist, see the FAQs above for how to generate logs and report more details.

And then, what's your source footage?

To get proper performance on a gaming laptop you’ll need to:
- plug into power while editing
- make sure fans are not blocked (these laptops can throttle w/o airflow)
- power mode set to Performance / highest
- nVidia control panel: Manage 3D Settings > Preferred Graphics Processor > High-performance NVIDIA processor
- make sure Resolve is using the nVidia GPU: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=122062

Ok next try creating proxies for video. If music is a MP3 try transcoding that to a WAV first (can do with Shutter Encoder if you need a free tool).

The sample rate of the audio may also be important.

Also make sure you keep background processes and apps to a minimum.

It is impossible to speculate what is affecting you without actually seeing what is going on with your system while you are being affected. So if I were you I would open Task Manager and look for what might be maxing out / bottlenecking at those moments. For example, 16GB is really tight, you might be maxing out memory and swapping to disk.

In the meantime few quick suggestions:

1. Make sure you are actually using hardware accelerations.
3. Check your settings for proxies and cache codecs. Wrong setting will cause too much workload.
4. Prebuilt PCs often come with aggressive anti-virus settings and BitLocker enabled. For first one exclude your DR folders from on-demand scanning. Second one if enabled can max out CPU and significantly throttle down I/O.
5. If laptop is what you must have MacBook Pros have reputation of working well with Resolve.

Super Quote.

My Lenovo also has a PROPRIETARY setting to choose the speed of the system. "High Performance" "Balanced" and "Power saving". I thought it was just the fans but no, it DOES affect the peak power the CPU is allowed to draw. It changed between 15W to 65W. And when on battery I cannot go over 55W.

Mine is a Ryzen which is gentler than Intel. So 100%, if you want to use Resolve on a laptop you MUST be plugged in and make sure you're squeezing every possible bit out of your system. Find what MSI does to set the laptop at max power. Maybe the Windows "high performance" setting is enough, maybe not. Check the temps and you might want to set the fans to run louder - Loud = faster = CPU runs cooler - CPU does not throttle or throttle later.

And without starting an Apple vs ROW fight (I am NOT an apple person) is why the Apple Silicon is so cool - literally. The latest intel might be slightly faster but you need a power plant to get to that performance.

I don't have Apple M* experience but if you are not comfortable with drivers, settings etc, you might want to swap your intel laptop for a Mac - Apple owners' opinion is welcome here as I am 100% Windows :)

What can I say? It simply works. Off mains power just as well.
But don't despair if you hate Macs, just wait until Snapdragons get there, they are coming for Windows and will sooner or later be supported by DR.
