Is this laptop ok?

PostThu May 16, 2024 3:19 pm

Hi !

I am new to DaVinci Resolve.
I'm looking for a new laptop, but I'm not sure if the graphics card is good enough.
It's a NVidia RTX 3050 with 4 GB.

I only need to edit my own home videos, nothing advanced.
if the graphics card is not good enough, I would like to ask for recommendations.

Other specs:
CPU: I7-12650H
Memory: 16 GB DDR4
HD: 1024 GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD

Thanks,
Milanese

For this work, I recommend using a desktop with multiple internal drives and at least a 1440 27" monitor. Anything less will offer a severely compromised experience.

Regarding the GPU, I believe you should choose one with at least 12 GB of VRAM. I think you could end up having issues with anything less.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

What sort of files are you editing?

I'd aim for at least a 3060 but it'll depend on what you're working on.

With only 4GB of VRAM you will find it slow if you are going to edit 3840X2160 UHD footage. The more VRAM you have the better for Resolve.
Resolve Studio 19.0b3 build 33
Dell XPS 8700 i7-4790, 24GB RAM, 2 x Evo 860 SSDs, GTX1060/6GB (551.86 Studio Driver), Win10 Home (22H2), Speed Editor, Faderport mk1, Eizo ColorEdge CS230 + BenQ GW2270 + Samsung SA200, Canon C100mk2, Zoom H2n.

Not only slow, it may crash with UHD.

I was unable to export 4k with my 4gb Gtx1650 laptop due to insufficent Vram.

Sadly laptops have not got near the selection of GPUs that desktops do. Not sure if there is a 12gb option out there? 16gb are stupid priced. So 8gb is probably where you will be.

If being portable is essential, Apple Silicon based laptops (M1, M2, M3 etc) are pretty damn good. I have a first gen M1 laptop (2020) that cooly and quietly handles much that would previously have required a beefy desktop system.

Thanks for all the replies.

Just a few comments:
I currently record in Full HD (1900x1080), but in the future it will probably be in 4K.

A desktop computer is unfortunately not an option, as I often edit when I am not at home.
A Mac would probably be good, but my budget doesn't allow for a Mac. They are quite expensive over here.

I understand that more is better, so I will see what options I can find a laptop with a 3060 card (or better) with 8 GB.

I'd wait for the future laptops based on Snapdragon. They should be able to compete with Apple silicon.
Anybody who is now shelling out for a conventional laptop will be sad very soon.

4080 laptop 12GB VRAM is the better choice, the difference between 4060 and 4070 laptop 8 GB VRAM is not relevant and should be the next option.
Edit to add: So if you are short of money you can go for a 4060 instead of a 4070. Both have same VRAM. And a laptop with 4060 should be a couple hundred euros cheaper. Get a 100%sRGB screen at least for acceptable color reproduction.

A GTX 3050 is a no go.
