Snapdragon X Elite - Performance Issues

PostMon Jun 24, 2024 3:47 pm

So I got a new Surface Pro 11 (X Elite, 16GB) on launch day, and instantly fired up DaVinci Resolve and to my disappointment performance has been subpar.

Playback and scrubbing are almost impossible to use. I'm on a 1080p vertical timeline using 4K H.265 footage.

Hardware acceleration is enabled but I noticed something peculiar. During playback while constantly dropping frames, the GPU is showing 0 hardware decoding under process manager:

I figured as a beta, I'd run into some issues but I'm not entirely sure if this is within normal range. This has never happened on my other machines, even my Intel SLS2.

What do you find with the same res landscape pix?
What do you find with DNxHR clips in place of H.265?

Okay so I spent the afternoon doing some testing. I tested the following 10-bit 4:2:2:

H.265 Vertical 4K Footage on a 1080p Vertical Timeline
H.265 Vertical 4K Footage on a 4K Vertical Timeline
H.265 Horizontal 4K Footage on a 1080p Horizontal Timeline
H.265 Horizontal 4K Footage on a 1080p Horizontal Timeline
and
H.264 Vertical 4K Footage on a 1080p Vertical Timeline

I don't have access to any DNxHR clips at the moment so will have to try that another time.

The results were (mostly) the same. X Elite plugged in and set to Best Performance. Dropping frames heavily during playback (mostly when there are b-roll clips stacked on top of a-roll and it goes through multiple cuts). There were slightly less frames dropped when working on native resolution timelines but it was a negligible difference.

In all of them, the GPU was not showing decoding at all:

Now I'm by no means an expert (or a dev for that matter) so I can't speak much on this but hopefully this helps.

I do notice that I get decoding activity under process manager when working on my Surface Laptop Studio 2 (i7-13700H, RTX 4060) but only on H.265 as the Intel Quick Sync supports it. I remember having very similar stuttering issues when I was working with H.264 on that machine and purposefully switched to H.265 and that resolved most of those issues at the time.

I'm seeing similar issues, are you also seeing windows hardware failure in windows reliability history

I do have some but it's hard to tell what from specifically or if they are related to Resolve.

A similar problem with snapdragon laptop was corrected by resetting the laptop and reinstalling windows.

Do you have a link to this thread, would love to check it out. Would be amazing if it was this simple but as my entire device is setup, would hate to go through this process without a result. I've seen others complain of the same issue so just want to be sure before I go wiping the whole device.

When you hear more of the backstory of the latest Snapdragons, it makes sense that software support has been a disaster

Apparently development hardware had not even shipped to software devs when the hardware launched. So Black Magic didn't have any snapdragon hardware to run their code on until they were able to buy retail laptops.

He goes on to say Apple sent out M1 dev kits a year before Apple Silicon went to consumers.

Check back in in 2025, there might be something worth buying then.

Well I wonder with them being out for almost a month now if we'll see some improvements. I'm still not seeing decoding at the hardware level on B4 of v.19. I just got my hands on a Vivobook S, going to see if it's any different over there.

Just following up here to confirm I have the same issue on the Vivobook S so it's not device specific nor would a reset fix the issue.
