Sony Burano Clips show as Media Offline

PostThu Nov 07, 2024 5:32 pm

I have a new and exciting problem. I'm grading a short that was filmed in 8K RAW on a Sony Burano. The footage is stored on two SSDs. Both are formatted exFAT (no issues with the drives). For some reason, the footage that is on the second drive will not import into the bin correctly. When I drag the clips in, they only show as Media Offline. But I know the clips are there; I can view and play them in the Media Storage window but when I drag them into the Media Pool they show as offline. I've never had this issue before. Anyone else?

I'm not sure about this, but i heard that the free version of resolve has some limitations when handling certain codecs, and will show as media offline. Are you are using the free version?

A message "paid version only" instead of media offline would make it less confusing IMO.

Make sure you are using Resolve 18.6.6 or higher.

If you can select the clips in the Media page Media Storage area, and see them in the Viewer, I would expect them to still work after being added to the Media Pool.

What are your system details? What Resolve version? What OS version? What GPU type?

I'm using Studio, and it happens on both my Mac Studio and my PC. Here's the really strange thing: when I load the footage from the SSD, the problem is there, but if I load the footage from the HDD backup drive then it works just fine; I can see the clips in the viewer and they also work in the media bin. I thought it may be an issue with the SSD but it's fine, and I also tried moving the footage to another SSD from the HDD and the problem persisted.

Mac is a Studio M1 Ultra; PC is Windows 11, 7800X3D/RTX4090/32GB DDR5; Resolve is 19.0.2 Build 7, but I just noticed there is a 19.0.3 update so I'm going to install that and report back.

I installed the latest build, and the problem is still there. I'm confused.

It is confusing.

To refresh, you have files on 1 SSD that work, and files on another SSD that don't work, correct?

Do the clips have .mxf extensions in both cases?

Do the clips have matching .xml files in both cases?

When you add a clip to the Media Pool and it appears Offline, if you put the Media Pool in List view and look at the File Path column, is that path is where the clip is really located?

I would not try to use an exFAT drive on a Mac. Copy it to a Mac-formatted drive (HFS or APFS) and then access the files from there instead.

Actually, I wouldn't use exFAT for Windows either.
Rather get a tool like the ones from Paragon to make the other systems modern formats read/writeable.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.
