Issue with 19.1 and Relinking Media

PostFri Nov 15, 2024 5:20 am

I have some offline audio files that I group select and right click to relink. I point them to my Sound FX folder which usually finds everything in a few seconds after the "Finding Matching Media" dialogue.

Now it just hangs forever and eventually the program will completely crash with Windows saying it has to Force Quit. I've never seen this on this particular project on any previous versions.
System specs:
OS: Windows 11
CPU: Intel i912900K 3200Mhz 16 core
RAM: 128GB DDR4-3000
GPU: NVIDIA A6000

Where are the sound files stored?

What happens if you try only one?

So if I even try to relink a single file it's crashing the project.

The files are just on a USB-C Hard drive. Nothing special. And also nothing has changed in the project except updating to 19.1 and now I can't relink anything which is a major problem.

Try moving the files to an internal drive.

In my experience I’ve never seen that be the cause of the problem. But you can try it of course!

FYI you’re describing a hang. Crash means the program disappears and the OS usually tells you why it disappeared (crashed).

Using the term crash when it’s a hang may confuse people trying to help.

Windows tells me the program is not responding and it does not come back.

The files being on an external drive has nothing to do with it. I been editing this same project for 6 months on this drive no issues until 19.1.

I’d suggest generating a log file and system info file and linking it here as described in the FAQ at the top of the forum. Then a BMD person can take a look and see what’s going on.

I think they’ll also need the NFO file

How are the permissions on the drive? If Read & Write is permitted for everybody, it should "in theory' work.

It might help to go into User Prefs -> System -> Media Storage Locations and make sure that the external USB drive is listed in there (if it isn't already). In general, this should "just work," by itself.

Well that's what I thought too...

.. but last week I dragged a file from an external drive into Resolve, and it became "offline media" as soon as it was hitting the media pool. I put it on an internal drive and it worked just fine.

For more confusion: I use a lot of files on that external drive in the project, and they are all fine.

Since the last update, (19.1) is see a lot of shenanigans going on, when it comes to random offline media, but only in remote projects. As long as I stay local, it's all good.

This sounds like something worth understanding. We certainly don’t want Resolve choking on external drives! Are you willing to explore this? See if it happens consistently? Only on one ext drive or with many? Does drive throughput have anything to do with it? Etc.

It was a one time event (call it a glitch if you want). The next day the same drive worked okay.
I also never saw this behavior on other external drives.

The throughput is not a problem, since the material (8K Braw) doesn't have the data rate, to saturate the drive or connection.

The problem is not only with file linking. But now DaVinci is often unable to detect files, although you tell him the specific place where they are. Moreover, sometimes completely inexplicable things happen. You specify the place where the files are, he searches for them, after which he finds some one file, but instead of replacing it in place, he simply drags it into the project with another copy. And suddenly there are two files with exactly the same names in the media pool, only the one on the timeline is still offline. And the new one just lies in the media pool.
And sometimes it just kills the entire local database for no reason. And at the same time, not all files can be restored back.

I THINK you can import a file into the media pool as many times as you want. Though I’m not in front of my computer to check.

If you have a connected one in the media pool you could put it in a bin and use reconform from bins to connect the timeline clip to it.

Are you saying you’re using the Relink Media command with the offline clip selected and it’s instead adding a new clip to the media pool? If so is that reproducible and if so can you make a screen recording showing us?
