Keeping myself in the video does not work with magic mask

PostThu Mar 20, 2025 9:07 pm

I want to remove the background, and keep myself in the video. And then on a different track put in a different background. I have already added in the background I want to use.

When going to to the color tab, then going to magic mask, then using the pen tool tracing around me.
I then add a node add Alpha output. And then connect the nodes. How ever I am removed from the video.

I tried tracing me, I tried tracing around the background, and I get removed every single time. How do I keep my self in the video?

I am on Davinci studio 19. I followed this video tutorial here:

I have tried fusion, and did not have much luck with that. Some one was kind enough to give me some code to paste in to fusion, but for some reason the code did not work, when trying to render out.

so you're saying you are transparent when connected to the alpha output?

If so - just invert the magic mask selection (the icon in the panel with the circle inside a square).

Or, in the key output for the node, click the invert button there to invert the alpha piped out of the node.

By the way magic mask works by default by painting what you want to keep not what you want to exclude, if that is what you meant by "tracing around me".

That did not work.

It removes me and the entire background. I will try updating to 19.1.4 and see what does if anything.

Can you share a sample clip of the scene you’re trying to key?

Yes, I can do that. It will take me a bit.

I have attached a picture. The red lines are when I drew on the background to get rid of the back ground. And I found a different way to get rid of the background. But I cannot figure out how to undo the red lines. I went to the color tab, and then from there I do not remember.

To try and remove those red lines, I removed the video from the track, and then added it back in.

I found a way in some free software to remove the background, and it works great took me 15 minutes. Though it is not as refined as Davinci Resolve, it takes less effort. I spent 300$ on this software and wondering if I wasted my money.

Some one else suggested I use a green screen. That is great when I am inside wanting to film just my self, except when I am outside filming stuff. I can't take the green screen with me everywhere.

It will not let me upload the vide file. Do I need to put it on youtube?
