Premiere xml to Resolve: Stereo imported as dual mono

PostSat Apr 22, 2023 8:43 pm

Hi, i have finished a documentary and would like to import in Resolve via xml.
Usually i´m just grading, but this tome i will do some audio editing as well.

In Premiere The project is set up with stereo tracks and busses, as expected, but when i import the timeline in Resolve it converts it to dual mono for some Reason.

I tried linking busses, in the import dialogue i checked import multichannel audio tracks as linked groups.
in Preferences->User -> Editing under New Timeline Settings i set Stereo

I find it really annoying, because if i change volume i have to do it for both clips separately
How can i import it the same as premiere as stereo using one track only?
The clip attributes are set to stereo, as seen in the image below.

I´m on Windows on the 18.5 beta
Thank you!

Bernd, I had the same problem as you and it seems this issue lies withins Premiere Pro XML export, which is not well implemented. For another project I got XMLs from Edius which did not do this with stereo audio.

My workaround in Resolve:
Add a new stereo track below the dual mono tracks.
Select all clips in the dual mono tracks. Go into clip attributes and set the clips audio to stereo and adjust the channel assignments.
Drag all the clips of one of the mono tracks onto the new stereo track and you get your stereo back.
Delete the dual mono tracks.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

What version of Premiere supports exporting as FCPXML 1.9?

Fwiw, no specific need to create a new track, you could simply change one of the existing mono tracks to stereo (and delete the other).

Thanks everybody for the answers, i hoped that there would be a better workflow for the import, but for the moment, this should get me started. Thank you!

The workflow Premiere to Resolve is a common and important one.
I'm trying to take a project from Premiere to Resolve and, as discussed in this thread, all the stereo tracks turn into two mono tracks. There are lots of threads about this. It's trivial to reproduce.

STEPS
Create a project in Adobe Premiere
Put one stereo clip in a sequence
Export the sequence to FCP XML
Open Resolve and import the sequence

RESULT
The stereo channel from Premiere is now two mono channels in Resolve.
Importing the XML into Premiere results in a single stereo channel.

Looking at the XML I see it’s xmeml 4 - aka FCP6. Premiere doesn’t give you a choice.
It'd be nice if Premiere switched from exporting FCP7 XML to exporting FCPX XML or at least gave you the option. That'd fix Resolve's bug with importing Premiere projects to Resolve and thus ease people's transition away from Adobe to BMD...

Clearly it's against Adobe's self-interest to help people transition away from Premiere, so if this is going to be fixed the ball is in BMD's court.

I've attached a sample prproj and XML that I made when reproducing this.

Note: there are about 15 threads discussing this. They start around 2017.

The flip side of that coin is that by NOT fixing it, BMD is enticing people to stop using Adobe and do ALL there work in Resolve.

There is a workaround.

1. Delete every second mono track
2. Select all audio clips, and in Clip Attributes change every mono track to stereo. It seems that for every timeline track it will add another mono source in the Clip Attributes window but ignore that, just make sure that when you select Stereo it is set up correctly to point to both source channels

If I have 3 timeline tracks, this is what it looks like when I select all clips and enter Clip Attributes

2.jpeg
Switch format to Stereo...
2.jpeg (89.8 KiB) Viewed 2710 times

3.jpeg
...and then change any Mute channels accordingly
3.jpeg (95.19 KiB) Viewed 2710 times

3. The clips are now stereo but the tracks are still mono. If you have a lot of tracks then the fastest way to make them stereo is to select all audio clips and move them down, which will create new stereo tracks. You can then delete all empty audio tracks at once.

Premiere xml to Resolve: Stereo imported as dual mono

PostSat Dec 23, 2023 9:58 pm

This is indeed somewhat of a workaround - as long as all of your clips are uniformly stereo. Otherwise there’s the potentially painful extra process of selecting only the clips that were supposed to be stereo.

And changing/adding/deleting only the correct tracks.

Anything’s possible - but sending a Premiere project to Resolve shouldn’t be this hard. It’s bad for BMD.

Right now my solution is simple - for this project I’m using Premiere again. I don’t want to - but Resolve’s import issues are forcing my hand.

Try to import your Premiere XML into Premiere again and see if it does any better…

Premiere xml to Resolve: Stereo imported as dual mono

PostSun Dec 24, 2023 11:32 pm

As I said above, Premiere imports the xml perfectly.

I’ve included it above for anyone here to try as well.

I'm just jumping into this old thread as it is the top result when searching for this issue.

The problem persists - however, exporting an AAF from Premiere works correctly. Clips are correctly brought in as stereo and are placed on stereo tracks in Resolve.

Has this behavior changed in 19.1.4 !? I'm trying to figure out exactly what it does now (looking at the Inspector>File tab). It seems to be inconsistent now, one time things come in a stereo, maybe I mess around with it, delete it, next time it's default to two mono? [Edit: maybe it is consistent but it's different to before ]

I'm still testing it but can anyone shed any light on the new behavior?

Probably late to this discussion; however, if someone in the future stumbles upon this problem, here is what you need to do.
1. Inside your Premiere Pro Project export the entire timeline as aaf (don't mess with settings until you really need to)
2. Open Davinci Resolve and import a timeline (same process as XML) but, import the aaf file. That should solve the problem.

I am using Premiere Pro 2025 along with Davinci Resolve Studio 19.1.4 I was trying to take 5.1 audio from Premiere Pro to Davinci Resolve
