Ok here ya go:
Mousing on the top and bottom halves of a clip do different things.
The top slips the clip - ie moves the clip’s window into the media. So the extents shown are based on the media length and where in the media the clip lives.
The bottom slides the clip - ie the clip contents remains the same but it slides between the previous and next clips it’s attached to. So the extents boxes are based on the sizes of the previous and next clips.
Of course there’s a perhaps better explanation in the manual as this is off the top of my head.
