Trim Edit Mode shows different clip extents...why?

PostTue Mar 25, 2025 5:23 am

I invoked Trim Edit Mode on the edit page.

If I click on the video portion of a clip, I can a slip edit trim.
If I click under the video portion of a clip, it moves the whole clip.

However, the white rectangles that appear are different sizes!

I apologize in advance for several people who will probably tell you to read the manual or get some training.

I’ll give them the chance to do better and if you don’t have a good answer by mid day Tuesday I’ll give you one.

That's actually a good idea -- I applaud the suggestion. The whole section on Editing in the 19.1 manual (pp. 612-926) goes into the Trim edit mode and Extents in great detail.

Is it ironic that the images I posted are from a sample movie for "The Beginners Guide to Davinci Resolve 19": The OMO Promo?

And "The timeline viewer has automatically changed to a four-up multi-view preview of the
change you’re making...." doesn't seem to be happening on my box.

EDIT: The answer to the missing four-up multi-view is here:

"Please check if View > Enable Multiview Edit Preview is enabled."

Trim Edit Mode shows different clip extents...why?

PostWed Mar 26, 2025 2:18 am

Ok here ya go:
Mousing on the top and bottom halves of a clip do different things.

The top slips the clip - ie moves the clip’s window into the media. So the extents shown are based on the media length and where in the media the clip lives.

The bottom slides the clip - ie the clip contents remains the same but it slides between the previous and next clips it’s attached to. So the extents boxes are based on the sizes of the previous and next clips.

Of course there’s a perhaps better explanation in the manual as this is off the top of my head.

Ahhh, that's what is confusing. They arbitrarily limit how far you can move the clip.

Oops! Looks like autocorrect changed bottom to button. Funny haha.

Actually I take that back. I thought I understood the slide extents behavior but I just tried it and it’s not what I said. So I don’t understand what it’s doing either.

The slide trim is constrained by the available frames of the abutting clips.

Yeah I think I was too tired when I wrote that last night. It’s working properly as I said at first.
