Back in 2010, when Blackmagic first introduced Resolve 6 (after purchasing all the IP from daVinci Systems), they said at NAB, "we don't anticipate that any software updates will be paid." They've since said "there's no guarantee that all future updates will be free, but they have all been free since 2010." My memory is that daVinci 2K and Resolve updates prior to 2010 were at least $5000, but that's back when the entry-level version was about $200,000. [Peter can tell me if I'm in the ballpark.]
If they had just charged $50 per update since 2010, we'd now all owe them more than $500. I think it's remarkable that Resolve Studio has continued to be such an incredible bargain. But as I always say: "the trick is that the cost of the hardware can be much more of a challenge. $299 for software is chickenfeed. But when you add up a fast system, a calibrated color monitor, a control surface, lots of storage, extra SSD drives for cache and so on... it adds up."
