Please check for accuracy Editing DJI HLG footage

PostSun Apr 13, 2025 8:12 am

I have had a stab at my first ever Tutorial, as a one-off exercise, and I very much would appreciate a more experienced eye to look over it and check for any technical inaccuracies.

As for the presentation style, I am what I am and I can't exude enthusiasm like the Big Boy Tubers such as Linus, Marcus or even Gerald Undone.

I was pleased that I could include my Star Wars Vincent Van Gogh tee-shirt though.

Say this first thing: Pause video in Resolve forum, click on share, right click on link and copy it to notepad. Open a new browser page, put link in page and press enter and you can view full screen.

shave first, comb hair, wear neutral gray T shirt and use 3 point light ( with backlight separating you from background on your hair and shoulders). Make key light high front camera right, make fill close to edge of frame camera left about 1/2 stop less than key.
Use bigger high behind camera bounce for eye light. Just for spectral effect on eye, not for exposure.

Widen lens and use hands ( head to around just above waist frame). Show DJI drone when you mention it, and any other props you want to display. Get closer on lens when just dealing with the resolve screens.

Don't jump off the cliff ! There is hope !

Those are very helpful presentation tips. However I am a hobbyist filming in my front room and She-Who-Must-Be-Obayed will not allow it to be converted into a studio with lots of expensive lighting, especially for a hobby and an expected audience of a handful of views.

However I very much would appreciate any advice on the accuracy of what I was blathering on about just in case I was saying inaccurate stuff.

You also make a good point of showing my drone. That never even crossed my mind to try.

I was intending to have a picture-in-picture of my head while using the OBS of my screen but this was beyond my talents. I'd only just grasped the concept of multi-cameras and how to edit with the Audio Transcription process.

I was also worried that I'd have to move my chiselled face all over the place when it obscured important points of interest to draw attention to.

With a first and quite possibly last attempt at such a tutorial for me, there is definitely room for improvement.

Thank you. :D

You're doing great just by shooting and telling a sort of story, which is more than what I'm doing since I'm doing nothing.
That was funny reference to Rumpole.
Someone else will have to watch it full screen to comment on accuracy as I only use braw 4k to rec 709 and use resolve 15.

I’m confused by this second comment about not seeing full screen. When I click on the link I can see it in full screen.

Have I done something wrong that only I can do this?
I even went into a different web browser, while logged out, and could watch full screen.

As for the Rumpole reference, that must be a happy accident as I’ve never seen Rumpole.

Cheers

I’d think about upgrading to version 20.

I think from version 21 of soon after there will be a small fee for future upgrades.

I'm using 'edge' browser on win10. I can't see ANY videos on resolve forum full screen. I have to copy the link via share option, and open a separate web page, put in link, and then I can watch full screen as it plays directly from youtube.

Thanks for suggestions on upgrade.

Frank,

you have done a good job with this video so be encouraged. I run a video business and I always tell my clients that they need to be on camera the same person their customers would see when they walk through the door, so relax. You can make a lot of mistakes and people will see you as a real person, as long as you don't make a mistake in your area of expertise. You were worried that you didn't have Gerald Undone's enthusiasm, but I could actually see shades of Darren Mostyn's passion in your presentation.

As a content creator you will never be 100% happy with your work, but you can learn that while the video could be improved, it is still good as it is. When you show your video to others to get feedback, watch their eyes while they watch the video. You learn a lot more from their eyes than their words.

Understand too that when people give opinions, the opinions are subjective and not absolute truth. You need to work out what is useful to you and what isn't. In that vein, my comments about your grading is you seem to want to bring out ALL the details in everything. I look for the story and ask how I bring that out. In this clip, the story is about the demolition. My thoughts would taken the buildings in the background of the worksite, and made them slightly darker and slightly defocused. This directs the attention to the worksite without distractions. Something for you to think about.

All that said, the video is good and don't let the fact that it could be improved downgrade it's actual value.

Some really useful stuff for me there to work on. I'm going to go over all those points and see how I can improve, should I ever need to go in front of the camera again.

BTW
Thank you for the tentative comparison to Darren and his encyclopedic knowledge of grading.

Thank you.
