How to split a raw ProRes File?

PostMon Apr 07, 2025 7:22 am

I have a situation I haven't come across before. For 2 of my clients I provide raw, unedited, ProRes drone footage. They do the editing and want files as they come out of the camera. Both of them actually wanted footage from the same location but at different times. During the 2nd shoot, I took some make-up footage for the 1st client seeing as I was there. It has now ended up that some of the make-up clips contain elements for the 2nd client that I don't want to pass on to the 1st client. These elements were brought in by the 2nd client and are easily recogniseable. There is plenty of footage for the first client that does not include these elements, but I want to cut them out of the video that I send to them so that there is no doubt and no possibility of upsetting the 2nd client. The 2nd client is aware that I was taking make-up footage so there is no problem in that respect - I just want to keep the recogniseable elements of the 2nd client away from the first, but in a way that is still the footage as it came out of the camera.

How do we do this with Resolve?

The footage is ProRes, 4K, DLog, 25fps. How do we get this to the render stage without doing anything to the clips except deleting certain segments?

Thanks,
Darryl

Media Management can trim ProRes unaltered, assuming that you don’t refer to ProRes RAW.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

Try Media Management like Uli suggests. There's also another way in Resolve in the render settings, "Bypass re-encode when possible" but that requires that you aren't applying any changes at all to the clips and I don't think it will retain metadata.

Thanks Uli,

I was hoping there would be a relatively simple way to do this. We don't give the Media Tab enough attention.

Thanks Roger.

Will definitely try that if Uli's trick doesn't work. As far as not applying changes, except for trimming the length, I don't want any changes, so that is exactly what is required.

FFPEG will do it in seconds without re-encoding

https://superuser.com/questions/1850814 ... e-encoding

I would expect since Prores is all-I it won't have the frame level accuracy problems you get with h.264/5?

On a Mac one can make fast and easy trims in Quicktime. No third party apps are required.

Good Luck

Bypass re-encode when possible should do the trick.

Delivery page, Render Settings, Video tab, Advanced Settings.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

For the record, Uli's suggestion with Media Management worked well.

I created a timeline with exactly the clips I wanted to go to the 2nd client. Normal edit process here. Then at media management I gave it the timeline and it spat out 2 clips - one for each clip in the timeline. Exactly what I was after.

Thanks Uli

Glad to help.

Heads up for others: it doesn't work for all codecs in this world.
