Can we merge subtitles?

PostFri Apr 11, 2025 2:52 pm

First off, SUPER update here!

I've been experimenting with subtitles and at times two adjacent subtitles are breaking a sentence up and it would be much more understandable if we could click on the two subtitles and right-click and select "Merge subtitles". Is this possible somehow? If not, it would be a great improvement.

Yes, a merge forward and a merge backward would be a nice addition.

Two choices:
1. link them
2. cut the text from one, paste it into the other and delete the blank one.

If subtitles are essentially presented as clips, you should be able to do the same as you do with a clip. Copy and paste them and position them where you need them on the timeline. If they come from external source, you should be able to drag and drop them as any other clip.

For more advance operations with subtiles in pretty much any way you can, I would suggest you look into using specialized tools like Subtitle Edit free and powerful subtitle editor. Not sure if its for mac as well, but that is what I would recommend for any refinement of subtitles if you are on windows. Its crazy that its a free program considering how feature rich it is.

Personally I always export subtitles from resolve in .srt and run them trough SubtitleEdit and than re-import them. There is so much more you can do in that program and I doubt blackmagic will be that specialized anytime soon, so might as well leverage what is there for free already.

Do you know how to export just a subtitle track (without rendering audio or video)?

Yes. its simple as right clicking on the desired subtitle track and choosing export subtitle.

Here are the links to subtitle edit. It does pretty much all you would need with subtitles.

https://www.nikse.dk/subtitleedit

https://github.com/SubtitleEdit/subtitleedit/releases

Also I don't know if any changes have been made to Resolve 20, but since version 19 we could use transcription editor to create transcription, meaning just text we can export with no timecode, but we can make corrections. We can export subtitles normally with timecode of the source clip and you can also make timeline from transcribed audio or video, make corrections to the subtitles and export them as new subtitles with new timecode and any corrections you make. If you combine it with subtitle edit program its pretty much all you would need from subtitles.
