Sound output

PostSat Apr 19, 2025 10:23 pm

In know Resolve is basically a color grading tool. Unfortunately, it does not support audio very well, like I cannot get any sound output. I am on V 19 which apparently has audio bug issues. Is there a plugin to play audio back? Or is there a previous version of Resolve that handles audio?

Actually Resolve hasn't been a color grading only tool for a decade, and millions of users daily use the audio features..

Please detail your issues so someone can assist. Please start with describing your system and what clips you are trying to play, if you see waveforms or meters in the edit or Fairlight page etc.

RTFM first. If that doesn’t help, define the problem in a concise and coherent manner so your ask can be responded appropriately. Making generalizations without facts or knowledge is pointless because it doesn’t help you or help anyone to help you. Do you even know what audio and sound functionality you are looking for in Resolve; or checked out how it can be done in Resolve through the Fairlight page? Probably don’t even need Fairlight that deep of sophistication.

Some basic outline for you to know what’s in Resolve:
1. Media page - Media management (for audio, video, still, project, timeline content mgmt)
2. Cut and Edit pages - Full Non-linear editing tools
3. Color page - The premiere color grading tool (which you already pointed out… except it’s not just basic). Find me one that can do what Resolve can do in Color Grading? None.
4. Fusion page - VFX compositing tool.
5. Fairlight page - Everything you need to work on audio (and/or Sound).
6. Deliver page - Encoding of final media deliverables.

Resolve supports audio just fine. If you can't hear anything then your configuration or user error are most likely the cause.
Have a look at the free training materials supplied by Blackmagic. You will find them here.
https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/uk/products/davinciresolve/trainingAlso have a look at the Fairlight section of the Reference Manual. You will also find other useful videos on YouTube.

To add, if you are on Linux, AAC audio is not supported.

I don't understand why lack of AAC support on Linux seems to be blamed on licensing fees. How expensive is it for reading vs writing because other free app on Linux can at least read AAC encoded file... which would make life easier for us that have to ingest audio with AAC... even if we can't write it.

So we can dispel the notion it's cost... Comment below free apps you know that can handle AAC and if is read/write/both
