Can the engineers at Blackmagic please give us the ability to twirl open bins in the media pool? In the Master list my bins show up but I cannot twirl them open or twirl them down to see the contents. I must highlight them to see the contents in a separate window to the right. I spoke to the folks at NAB about this and when I was speaking about it had a small crowd of other editors gather around to also agree with me that there needs to be a way to twirl open the bins so we can see the contents right there in the Master list. In fact, the Master list is all we really need. The secondary window takes up way too much real estate on the screen.
Forcing editors to highlight the bin so that the contents of the bin then appear in another window makes my workflow so SLOW. Also, when I am working with multicam clips and pulling angles from different bins I want to see exactly what bin they are in and I want to be able to highlight them in separate bins so I can keep them straight and not leave any sources out. Whether I'm working with timecode jammed clips, in points, or any crazy mix of sources I need to see them in their bins when I'm creating a mulitcam clip.
If I'm editing a scene that requires me to look in different bins for a close up and a medium and a wide, for example, I need to be able to just twirl open the bins so I can see exactly what I need to see and quickly grab what I need to grab.
Or if I need to have a b-roll bin open it would be nice to quickly open and close it as needed without needing to take the time to click on the bin and highlight it and then go and sift through the clips in another window. I might have multiple b-roll bins all labeled in a way that keeps my project organized and I need to very quickly open these bins so I can see and compare shots.
I was a finishing editor for The Reel World, Road Rules, The Simple Life, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, to name a few, and as a department, we all figured out how to do things with as few mouse clicks as possible. This is because mouse clicks take time and we don't have time to waste. I need to edit at the speed of my thoughts and not get slowed down my editing system.
It was suggested to me by one of your people at NAB that, in Public Beta 20, I choose "source tape" from the three icons above the source viewer (source clip, source tape, timeline) and then in the drop down menu for "sort media by" choose sort by "bin" that I will see what I am asking for. This is not the case. It is kind of getting there but still is not what we need. This requires me to ctrl click multiple bins in the master list and then I have to jump over to the other window and scroll through another window and the clips can't be arranged when in the "sort by bin" view.
In the case of creating multicam clips this is a nightmare. I NEED to see the contents of A cam, B cam, C cam, D cam, all at once so I can choose the right clips to make a multicam. I will not by looking at timecode what shots I need to gather but in the "sort media by bin" view you can't then put the clips in order of timecode. Now I have to waste a bunch of time searching through the list of clips trying to find the timecode I'm looking for. We need to be able to sort clips in the order that works within bins and within other views.
A great fix for this would be to just allow bins in the master list to just twirl open right there so we can see the contents of the bins. We need to be able to sort the bins in any order we need while simultaneously sorting the clips within those bins in any way we need. For example, I would like to have my bins sorted in descending alphabetical order so I can see A cam through F cam in order. Then within the bin I need to be able to sort them by timecode start. This way I can quickly open several bins and grab all the matching angle to make a multicam clip.
If I'm editing a single camera narrative with multiple takes and frame sizes I'll need to arrange the clips in alphabetical order while my bins might be in scene order.
Another problem with this "source tape: sort media by bin" is that for some reason all clips show up in the preview screen as a string out like thing. Why? Is this like the bin is now a continuous source tape? If there's no way to zoom the timeline in the source viewer I don't know why this is helpful. Then when I find a clip to view and double click on the clip the entire view in the media pool changes to a completely different view and I can no longer see the clips in the bins. The bins are gone and it's just a list of clips in not particular order and from multiple sources. If I want to see the clips in the bins again I have to change one of the three icons above the preview window back to "source tape" and go back to the drop down list to resort the clips. This is a MESS! I can't even wrap my head around why most of this is even useful. We don't have time to keep changing the way we are viewing and sorting clips. If we could just twirl open bins right in the master view we could work so much faster.
It seems like Blackmagic is intentionally making Resolve cumbersome and complicated. SPEED is the name of the game for many of us. And this program is getting slower and slower. I sure hope you get this fixed.
