Vimeo 4K or HD?

PostWed Apr 23, 2025 8:03 pm

Most of the shows I work on are shot in 4K but posted in HD . However i just worked on one that is in 4K . For Vimeo is there any advantages/disadvantages to posting in 4K or HD?

This one is actually a little odd as they didn't shoot UHD 3840x2160 but true 4K 4096 x2160 (god knows why). Would that make any difference?

Any difference on DCP which they also need to make? Should the file sent for DCP be 4K or HD?

I usually always go HD/H.264 to Vimeo. but if I go 4K to Vimeo should that be compressed as H.264 or H.265?

Thanks
Lenny

Not sure the delivery method really matters. UHD has the same advantage over HD for all of them. (Vimeo, YouTube, Netflix, physical media, etc.)

For uploading, I actually prefer something a bit more robust - ProRes, DNx or Cineform are all good choices that should work fine. (You will need good Internet upload speeds, though. ;) )
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Yes ProRes is a hell of a lot bigger file but I have a fiber connection at last. I've always figured i was better off compressing on Resolve rather than leaving it to Vimeo though . Have you actually seen a difference?

To the best of my knowledge, both YouTube and Vimeo will recompress whatever you upload, so the idea is to upload the best quality you can. I have seen better end results when uploading Cineform compared to H.264.

Hey
I've stopped Vimeo but whatever, after several tests on several projects (and above all for many years), it appeared to me that there are no advantages in sending ProRes as it is to YT or Vimeo, compared to a solid high profile cabac H264...

I have a fiber 100 MB bandwith as well, and in terms of time, it may be argued that encoding my ProRes master I export anyway* in H264 should be compared to the time this very ProRes would take to be sent as it is to the online Vimeo/YT account.
So is ProRes -> H264 -> Vimeo/YT taking less time than ProRes -> Vimeo/YT ?
(*this is for me, you might export in H264 for Resolve and get rid of a step)

My results : if a video lasts less than around 2 mn, I send the ProRes master, if not i first encode in H264 (with Handbrake or Shutter Encoder)

I put it up in HD and 4K and let my client decide which link she wants to send people. It was 17 min so I compressed first in H265 then sent to Vimeo. I did think it looked a little better in 4K and User has a choice with Vimeo anyway.
Thanks for all the help as always. This forum remains a godsend to me . Thanks to all you angels!
