Help with video recording and Resolve settings

PostThu Apr 24, 2025 6:06 am

I recently acquired a brand new Canon HF G20 for free! While only HD, it produces some very nice video. I would like to combine clips from this camera with 4k 30p footage from my DJI devices (Pocket 2 and Action 4).

While the G20 indicates that it can record at 30p, it actually uses progressive segmented frame recording to generate MTS files, so the video is interlaced. I will be editing in Resolve, so would it be better to record at 60i natively to allow for deinterlacing to 30p, rather than using the cameras ‘30p’ option?

Also, what would be the best way to handle the different video files. Both DJI’s are set to generate 4k 30p files, so should I just set Resolve at 4k and then let the program handle the G20 ‘30p’ file deinterlacing? I have used Hybrid with QTGMC in the past to generate 59.94p files from 30i footage for editing in Resolve and was pretty happy with the results. However, it was pretty time consuming and file sizes were large (I used Shutter Encoder and FFV1 as the codec to get the files into a suitable format for Hybrid).

So should I just throw everything at Resolve and let it do its magic, or are there some simple things I can do to maximise performance and output quality?

Thanks!!

Deinterlacing will always look worse than true progressive.
But if that's really PsF, you can just 'lie' to DR and mark it as progressive in the Clip Attributes.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

Uni,

Thanks, however I am a little confused. Will Resolve not deinterlace the file if the clip attributes are marked as progressive? Or can it recognize the file as PsF and do what is necessary to correct for a progressive timeline?

If I have fast motion in the clip will I see jagged edges and would it not be better to record at 60i and then deinterlace down to 30p?

Thanks for your help.
