Need advice on color grading tapes.

PostMon Apr 28, 2025 4:50 am

I'm trying out color grading on my tape transfers. I usually do levels adjustment in Avisynth, but I was recommended Resolve since it's more tailored to color grading. I don't need to do anything fancy, I just want my whites to be white and my blacks to be black.

So I first tried it out with one of my VHS transfers. I tried out the white/black level selections, and it seems to look OK, but it looks like some stuff is clipped according to the histogram?

I also tried it with a couple of my Betacam transfers, but this time I set my points where I see color bars.

Is this anything I need to worry about? Does anyone know what I should do?

I would likely adjust the contrast and RGB curves a bit.
