Adaptive audio clip workflow

PostMon Apr 28, 2025 7:18 am

I'm trying to understand the workflow with adaptive audio clips. Let say that all my media have audio with 8 channels : 5 HF microphones, 2 two booms microphones and 1 downmix. I set these clips as adaptive 8 channels clips and create a timeline with adaptive 8 audio tracks. So far so good for editing. But what happens when i want to mix every individual channels ? I don't find a way to do that in Fairlight.
The other option is to set, before editing, my clips as 8 mono channels and create in my timeline many many mono tracks but that means that i will have to manage a lot of tracks which can be very messy and create and complicate a lot any moves in the timeline.
I don't understand the point of adaptive tracks if at some point, it's impossibe to mix each channel individually.
What am i missing?

Level control is provided for individual channels - select a source channel and then adjust its level:
Clip Inspector > File tab > Audio Configuration > Level

In the Fairlight environment prior to mixing, right click a Track header > Convert to Link Group. Unlink via Fairlight menu > Link Group. Individual source channel levels are retained.

Thank you for the answer. I have been able to use what you explained but i still have some issue.
During the edit, i only need to hear the domnwix, so i can batch fade down the levels of all audio channels i don't need by selecting all the clips and make the modification in the Inspector/File/audio configuration.
But, when i have finished my editing and preparing for the mix, i will need to hear every channels again. But it seems that it's impossible to select all clips from the timeline and batch modify them to hears all the channels again. Does that mean that i have to select individually each of my hundreds of clips and set every level one by one ? That doesn't seem right.

It’s easier than you think. You have a stereo down mix you want to edit with. So…
Select all your source clips, open Clip properties, and make an Adaptive 2 or stereo pair. Then assign your mix to those two channels.

Edit your film.

When you’re ready to mix, select all your timeline clips, change them to Adaptive 8, and assign all your channels. Then go to Fairlight and turn them into a linked group as described above.

To me this workflow is anything but obvious. But it does work!

Wow, that is really not an obvious workflow. But you're right, it works ! Thanks a lot.
