As of the Resolve 20 beta, you are now able to select a media location for the project. There are a couple of areas this could be utilised for great quality of life improvements.
If any of this is a result of me misconfiguring my Resolve 20 project, or a misunderstanding of any of the mentioned features/configurations, please let me know!
Working Folders
The working folders chosen in Project Settings -> Working Folders are separate to the chosen project media location. It would be great if they could be made relative to this location by allowing templated file paths.
E.g., the three non-media location working folders could use relative paths of
Render in place default
The default location for the "Render in place" folder select dialogue is %USERPROFILE%. As far as I can tell, there is no way to change this behaviour.
Very rarely is this an appropriate location for the media to be saved, requiring manual navigation to the actual desired location.
For subsequent in-place renders, Resolve will use the most recent location for default of the dialogue. However, this does not persist across restarts of Resolve and is shared across all projects.
Requests:
Even if the project's media location is not the desired destination, it is likely to be closer than %USERPROFILE%.
This would be a small change in behaviour that provides a meaningful improvement to quality of life in day-to-day use of Resolve.
---
There may be more places media location could be put to work that I've not yet encountered, so feel free to post additional ideas in the replies!
One thing I'm not sure of is how the system-level Media Storage paths chosen in Preferences -> Media Storage differ/relate to the project-level media location. If anyone does know, I'd love to get some clarification.
Thanks BMD, Resolve 20 has been a real pleasure to use so far. I am eager to see what else you have in store.

- Code: Select all
Proxy generation: %{Project media location}/ProxyMedia
Cache files: %{Project media location}/CacheClip
Gallery stills: %{Project media location}/.gallery

Requests:
- Use the project's chosen media location as the default location of the "Render in place" folder select dialogue.
- Persist the last used location across restarts on a per-project basis. Each project's most recent location should be used for that project only.
- Introduce a project-level toggle to bypass the dialogue entirely - saving to the project's media location without confirmation/selection.
- Not directly related, but it would also be beautiful if we could (optionally) choose a project-level default for render in place file name template/format options. In tandem with the above request, render in place could then be an action with zero confirmations necessary (if desired).
Even if the project's media location is not the desired destination, it is likely to be closer than %USERPROFILE%.
