Playback audio output too low

PostMon Feb 28, 2022 6:56 am

Hello, Resolve 17.2.2 on MBP M1 2020 basic specs here. I regularly export my project with very simple edit and color grading on 4k 4:2:2 footage. But I'm having strange issues with my edit workflow: audio playback seems way too low when comparing the same audio clips (I usually shot in dual audio setup) on the same Mac in Reaper.

Double checked DIM off, no master volume regulation or general/clip effects. Just clips sound very low even with system volume at 100%. I use an external DAC AMP via TB4 for monitoring audio and always try to accommodate my ears before and during my editing session just throwing in my edit some professionally mastered clip as reference.

I'm really getting mad about that. It's not a serious issue because I always make my mixes checking LUF meter, but it impacts my confidence in making mixing by ears, even if I try to have a well balanced and neutral monitoring chain, hardware and software speaking.

Any hint about that? Has anyone had same issue? Thank a lot pals.

Is this on the Edit or Fairlight Timeline?

Same behaviour with Built-in Audio (i.e. MacBook Pro Speakers)?

Are audio levels in the Fairlight Mixer correlating with the source media?

I am having the same low output issues. I cannot crank enough volume out of my MacBook Pro, even with low impedance headphones and the audio set to proper levels in the mixer, to get a good sample of what the soundtrack is really doing in an edit page.

When I render a project, the sound levels are generous on the MacBook from a rendered file or in playback on a home system video setup.

This is very frustrating, because a proper mix cannot be heard at realistic levels.

Is there a Davinci Resolve 17-18, master audio output level setting in the application? What the heck? Let's get some work done. Any insight would be appreciated.

Resolve Free version 18.0.04 Rev 5.
MacBook Air M1 2021

The playback volume of clips in the timeline are super-quiet through laptop speakers, AirPods, and wired earbuds.

I have A/B'd Resolve with QT player, Premiere, Audition, VLC, and the YouTube player in the browser.

I set the global system audio level at 50% with the slider, YouTube player volume slider at 50% and for the audio apps, set all the levels to peak below 0db, and everything sounds good.

The volume when playing the same clip in the Resolve edit timeline without moving the global audio setting is almost inaudible, even though the Resolve fader meters are peaking yellow and red. The "Dim" function is not selected. When I check"Dim" in the menu, the audio gets even quieter.

Is there a hidden setting somewhere? Is this a limitation of the free version?

There is a "Mute" icon to the lower-right of the viewer, but it does not have a volume control. Mute and unmute only.

I will try to replicate using an external audio interface and monitors and report back later.

Found it. Right-click the speaker icon on the timeline and adjust the slider. Derp.

I've got the same issue.

Windows 11 Home
Davinci Resolve Pro - Studio 19 V 19.0.3 Build 5
Processor 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-13900H 2.60 GHz
Installed RAM 16.0 GB (15.7 GB usable)
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

System speakers on playback for Davinci are set to the device default which play everything else very clear and loud (including the source file I'm editing, YouTube, Spoitfy, etc.), however, the edit playback is so low it is painful to work with.

I have turned the volume up all the way on Fairlight and DIM is not active.

Studio 19 on Linux here
Speaker maxed DIM not selected
System/other apps play loud, DVR don't. Thought there would be something in preferences audio i/o but nada that I can find. Rendered vids play at desired sound just so quiet in DVR.

Anyone ever figure this out?
