NotchLC Codec for Delivery and Playback

PostFri Mar 26, 2021 8:45 pm

Hey guys,
is there any plans or attempts to include NotchLC codec support in the near future?
For me as motion designer this is the only thing I truly miss in Resolve, since this codec is fully utilized to be played back by assigning to GPU VRAM, which is essential for me in realtime playback situations.

There is already support in Adobe, but I don't want to go back to their model, since this was the initial reason why I started using Resolve Studio in the first place.

Never heard of this codec before, but it looks amazing. Their website says it can be added to any application for free, so I hope Blackmagic will take them up on that offer.

I also really hope so since it is a really useful codec for anything realtime-related, like in television programs: We use HAP for our Studio LED walls, which is already really great but still not as optimized as NotchLC, that would really change the range and quality of the visuals one could use in those live situations.

Third-partys can now build encoders for us to add to Resolve.

Bot for decoding, for use while editing, we're still dependent upon BMD adding that support.

Having never heard of this codec, with no cameras using it, I'm skeptical we'll see its inclusion in Resolve any time soon.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

We use this codec a lot in Desguise mediaservers for content on LED volumes on film sets, it would be really useful to include this as an import/export option so all content can be colour managed for the production in the same ACES colour space not just the camera records.

It's really becoming hard to manage Colour spaces if everyone is using different programs to render stuff or re-encode stuff, having one platform that could do it would be beneficial to the whole film industry as as there are more LED displays being used for in camera effects now.

Please take this request seriously, Notch codec is used globally for Desguise servers now and Desguise servers are the gold standard for delivering content to LED volumes for in camera effects.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

+1
I use Notch to create my visual, and Rendering in NotchLC is so fast that an image sequence is not a option.

After effect have intergreted, but so so well, in preview mode 1/4 it create playback blur glitches.

NotchLC is a pretty damn good quality, it have a place in the Davinci Resolve package.
I cross fingers that it will be integrate soon !

+1 more...

Hi BMD Team, I hope you're reading this! Just wanted to say that as my employer is looking to switch our default NLE from Premiere to Resolve, the lack of NotchLC support is a stumbling block that is preventing this change. Please do consider adding NotchLC to your codec support-- I spoke to the folks at Notch and they say it's up to BMD. It's business and I'm guessing licensing fees are a part of this discussion, I get it, but FWIW, it's an important feature that's preventing us from getting serious about using Resolve as our main edit tool.

Thanks for your consideration!

Hello team Blackmagic I would also like to put in a request for NotchLC to be included in Davinci Resolve for playback and encoding. The NotchLC codec is extensively used around the world for playback on media servers for live events and video installs.
I know its probably quite a small part of the overall market but this would be a great addition to help this industry to move over to DR as the majority of people are tied to Premier when checking and editing NotchLC files.

Many thanks

Andy Coates
