Nesting sequences with different aspect ratios

PostThu Jul 06, 2023 7:31 pm

I have a unique situation that I am trying to find a fix for. We are coming from Premiere where this is quite easy to do and I already have a timeline set up, but for this project we would like to use Resolve, and I would think this would be easy.

Basically we are editing content for a conference that uses 3 LED screens, a main center screen and 2 side screens at different aspect ratios. I would like to create 1 main timeline that is the width and height of all 3 screens, and have 3 other timelines at the aspect ratio of each individual screen that will all be nested inside the main timeline. This way we can edit on the individual timelines and jump to the main timeline to see what the full layout would look like.

I can create the multiple timelines, but when I drop those timelines into the main one (or nest them) it fills the entire space, and I can't get the original aspect ratio back. I've attached what it looks like in both programs for reference

I'm only seeing the Premiere Pro screenshots.

What's your Input Scaling for the Resolve project?
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Sorry, didn't realize it only let me upload 3 screenshots. Here are the Resolve screenshots.

Same exact issue. I don’t believe there is a solve for this currently.

Nothing jumps out from the included images.

What are the four timeline resolutions - Left, Center, Main, and Master?

I've had this same issue. Creating videos for a live show with different screens. When nesting those different resolutions into a "Previs" sequence, to see the whole stage, those nested sequences would stretch or fill or the video tracks would all break apart and spread out, so graphic elements that were perfectly aligned in a base sequence were suddenly exploded and scattered once nested.

Only workaround I found was to have EVERY sequence UHD. That's the base sequences for each screen, and the previs master sequence. Then things didn't stretch unexpectedly. But you have to talk to the screen vendor and ask for alignment grids, ask which corner the grid should align too, and ask if you can have video overhang those grids. OR, ask if each sequence needs to be cropped upon delivery.

Wish things nested without being moved around.
