Features quietly removed from Resolve Free?

PostTue Feb 18, 2025 8:15 am

I just discovered that I can no longer launch any Lua scripts I set and put available in
Workspace > Scripts menu!
DR 19.1.3 B7

When I try to do that, I get a pop-up about "You have reached a limitation in Resolve..."

This is unfortunate as I developed the scripts for my use, mostly as helpers, in DaVinci Resolve 19, free.
The scripts were developed and tested on DR 19 and were launched and worked fine without asking for $299.
Does anyone have any knowledge of when this feature was removed?

cheers,
Dorin

It is worse than I thought. I cannot launch the scripts from the console either.

Nevermind, I'll quit the scripting in Resolve to prevent further surprises.

Do your scripts use UI ?
Scripts with UI require Studio license since 19.1.

Peter Chamberlain wrote:UIManager based scripts and workflows need DaVinci Resolve Studio or Fusion Studio to be accessible.

For some time scripting through any UI has been the domain of the Studio version - this includes node.js based and UIManager based scripts and Workflow Integrations. Some workflows slipped through earlier versions and its taken some time to get to this but in Resolve 19.1, we addressed this issue with UIManager to be consistent with Workflow Integrations.

Thanks, that must be.

Indeed, e.g. , the script from my signature "Playhead Lock ON-OFF" uses the UI

But why is no mention here?

This is awful as it breaks people's workflows and plug-ins. If something is there long enough it becomes an expectation. Taking something away vs adding things that are new to a premium version are entirely different things. I would have thought there would be more noise on this from the community.

Think you'll find most of the professional and semi- professional community are quite happy to pay the nominal price for the Studio version and the higher end functionality it offers.

Your point, Andy, does not negate the point above it.

Taking away something that was there previously breaks what was previously working.

I think that's basically true. People have to stop expecting to get lots of stuff for free with the free version of Resolve.

When I get complaints from students about that, I tell them, "well, you could always try the free versions of Avid, Final Cut Pro, or Premiere... except there aren't any." Resolve Studio is actually cheaper than all of them already. (Actually, I just checked and Final Cut Pro is also $299, but is Mac-only.)

Exactly. There is a little bit of "you get what you pay for" here.

I think the OP was measured and careful with their language. Someone who put some time and effort into making something work and then made those tools available to the public for free obviously.

Now the tools they made don't work, and presumeably for others' as well now. They were expressing surprise and I guess disappointment. Why is that difficult to understand?

Well, if I paid for it then yes it would become an expectation. If I didn’t pay for it and it’s free to use, then what’s there to expect other than it is really made free for educational purposes most likely. So if someone really needs it to work and it is a very personal or professional effort, then paying for it is to be expected. After all, BMD never said it’s software is freeware or open source.

I would still have expected to see a changelog entry in Resolve to indicate feature removals though when BMD has created a userbase of 1 million plus for their freemium offerings... it seems like an internal architectural change of that scale would be worth one line of text in the release notes.

This was a bit of an understatement at the time IMHO:
  • General performance and stability improvements.

Ellory Yu wrote:After all, BMD never said it’s software is freeware or open source.

I do think most people going to the Resolve product page download section would reasonably infer that the "Free" button text does indicate there is a Resolve Free download aka a closed-source "freeware" offering version that would exist under the freemium style business model.

I see your point, but there's a lot not covered in the release notes and the ReadMe files, especially for features that have been dropped or depreciated. Same thing for features that have been moved or slightly changed.

I've often said, though, if it were up to me, I would discontinue the free version entirely because it causes a lot of support and compatibility problems. I might grudgingly allow a $9.95 "basic" student version of Resolve that had a very limited feature set, was HD-only, and offered an upgrade path to Resolve Studio. But free? No.

I'm sympathetic to people who need to try out the program to make sure it does what they want, and they need to use it for a week or two to at least go through the basic tutorials. That, I understand.

And it is not a "feature". It is bad practice. Release notes have always been notoriously shallow in their description, any and all things, both big and small all can fit under "random unlisted improvements and twinkering". Even the things that do get listed are frequently ambiguous. "Addressed an issue with X" well, ok, there are like 10 bugs there, which one did you fix now?

Did they go back and remove it from older versions?

If not you can just stick with the older versions .

I don't remember what was added in 19.1 but plenty of people run older releases for various reasons.
