Mac, 18.5b1. Still an issue, 2023. (Same as above -- relinking, deleting selected clip cache, even reimporting the clip anew (!). The ONLY thing that works for me is restarting Resolve. (PSD files.) Cheers!

SIX years later and this is still an issue! I'm speechless. And yes I'm running Studio.

In another thread it was mentioned that BMD didn’t necessarily know there was operating system support for doing this efficiently - ie without constantly polling all the files to see if they’ve been modified.

Now they know.

Perhaps this awareness will help move fixing this issue along.

The problem here in DavinciResolve is forcing it to update its cache... But as any CS student knows:

There are only two hard things in Computer Science:
  • Cache invalidation
  • Naming things
  • Off by one error

attributed to Phil Karlton (and Leon Bambrick for the third one :D)

The way to signal DR to invalidate its clip cache is using the Media Pool right click operation "Replace Selected Clip...". So here's my workflow in DR 18.6 (tried in macOS and Ubuntu):

  1. Externally edit a clip (modifying image or sound)
  2. Save the new version alongside the original one, with a slight name modification
  3. Back in DR: Find In Media Pool + Replace Selected Clip...
  4. Chose the new modified clip
  5. Tadaa! Refresh is done!
  6. If another external modification is needed, save under the original name
  7. And alternate back and forth between the two names for each refresh

Is this working for you?

7 years from first message and still no fix.

I am really loving Resolve. But its many simple little things that I'm finding the developers for some reason just ignore that are driving me nuts and keeping me from purchasing the studio edition.

Each item I run across I find people asking for many years with no responses at all is so discouraging.

To be clear, the refresh is working but if the sequence changes it's length then you have to reload the whole thing

Nope. This doesn't work for me with a png image. The only solution is to restart DaVinci Resolve.

I found a solution to an audio file i was trying to update (I exported audio to fix it in izotope, made an adjustment and wished it would just pop in nicely updated in my timeline)

For audio: Right click the clip, Clip Attributes, change Source Channel 1 to 2, and Source Channel 2 to 1.

That worked in updating the clip for me. Who knows if its because I tried all the other solutions here first, restarting Da Vinci multiple times, clearing cache, etc or not.

I still find myself tied to After Effects for a lot of the title work I do but I assemble the full videos in Resolve.

The way it handles overwritten files still drives me crazy and I haven't found a solution. There is some cache it keeps that I do not have access to clearing. It'll flash at random between the old version and the new one on renders. Making simple changes to titles is an absolute chore as they need to be reimported instead of just cleanly updating the titles in the timeline. I'd love some sort of info of how to get around this. I feel like I've tried every workaround and every time I end up just having to replace everything manually. For long timelines this is a chore.

Hmm. What kind of workflow do you do to keep your from making changes? Something is not right there? Pretty much any changes you would do inside of resolve should be easy to update at pretty much any stage unless you sabotage yourself early in the workflow. You must be doing something wrong.

What kind of simple changes to the titles are a chore for you? I don't understand. If you explain it, perhaps we can figure out some way for this not to be a chore. Because it really shouldn't be.

What kind of titles are you doing, where do you make them, how do you use them and what kind of changes are you making?

I've just published a script to automate the refreshing of media files. See my post here:

None of these solutions have worked for me. Del cache, Replace Clip, Unlink and relink, nada...

In the media poll I see the update in that preview window, but the "Media in" and "Media Out" on a fusion composition doesn't update. Cache del, didn't work.
Scripts a user posted, didn't work either.

Restart works. But trying to see if a render works in a composition is frustrating. A simple light tweak for a single file and I have to restart resolve :(

Just want to be able to right click and tell it to refresh.

Renaming the file always works, which you can do manually or via the scripts I posted.
