Macbook Pro M4 (Base Model) or Windows Laptop?

PostMon May 19, 2025 2:19 pm

Hello,

I am an assistant editor for a web series & feature film, i mainly do on-set editing, assembly, and first drafts. We have a proxy workflow. We usually edit in either dnxhr 1080p or h264. We don't edit in prores since my lead editor is on windows. When editing feature, I usually edit each scene into separate timelines and then lining them up on 1 timeline. Our Lineup timeline usually reach the 2 hour duration for feature, 45-60 for series. I also do light After Effects and Fusion for personal projects.

Right now, I am looking to purchase a new laptop since mine is starting to be insufficient for my workload. My current laptop, is an ASUS TUF A15; AMD Ryzen 5 4600H, NVIDIA GTX 1650TI 4GB RAM, 16GB RAM. I'm wondering if the Macbook Pro M4 (base chip) with 24GB Ram and 1TB ssd will be enough? Or if I should look for windows PC alternatives within the same price range (~$2000 or IDR 35,000,000)?

I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.
