Unable to record my voice in Fairlight/Edit (Resolve 20)

PostTue May 20, 2025 1:04 pm

I record voice overs in resolve, and have been doing so for the past few versions. Everything worked flawlessly in versions 16-19, but since I've downloaded Resolve 20, at times, I am seemingly unable to record any audio.

The issue is not consistent, and is usually fixed with a restart, but will always come back within 5-30 minutes. My audio is correctly routed. I can see my meters are green while I'm recording, and I can even see the waveform displaying itself in the recorded clip while I am recording. However, upon finishing the recording and listening back, the audio will either completely vanish from the saved clip, or cut in and out intermittently, between left and right sides for a very brief amount of time, before going silent.

I would really appreciate some help on this issue. I cannot seem to work it out, and I've verified that the issue is certainly with the latest version of Resolve. I have gone back to older versions, without changing anything else, and it works perfectly fine.

Is this issue isolated to ASIO or is System Audio behaving similarly?

Let me test it and I'll get back to you

Okay, I did a little more testing. I could not replicate the issue when using the microphone through system audio.

Interestingly enough as well, it seems like the voiceover function in the edit page is more consistently problematic. When using system audio, the edit page voiceover mode was perfectly functional, however, when trying the same thing with ASIO, the voiceover mode in the edit page would sound completely robotic, even after a restart. I changed buffer sizes, and sample rate, no change.

I suspect this might have something to do with why it won't work in the fairlight page also. Do you think the problem might be with the focusrite drivers?

Is another ASIO compatible device perhaps available?

Unfortunately not, no. I've used this same device in Ableton, and the previous versions of Resolve with no issues, what are you looking to test?

Without a Focusrite unit available it is difficult to reproduce and confirm potential Focusrite ASIO driver issues.

Just commenting here to also share that I have this issue as well with Resolve 20 and ASIO, which was working fine in Resolve 19. Similarly, when patching my mic onto an audio channel I have no problems hearing playback or getting levels. When recording, I see the audio waveform being captured correctly up until I stop playback to save the recording. I'll either get a recording that is silent/blank, or it'll be a random 1-2 second section of the recording on repeat.

Sometimes a restart fixes it, sometimes not.

Using the new voiceover record feature has similar broken results (mostly the robotic or completely distorted playback instead).

I am using Audient EVO hardware ASIO drivers and not focusrite ASIO drivers.

So it seems to be mostly an issue with ASIO drivers in general?

Hey man, I'm still having the same issue. If you manage to solve it, would you be able to let me know? Thanks in advance

I have this issue too.
I'm using Windows 11 Pro with Davinci Resolve 20 Studio, plugged up to a Steinberg UR22mkII (recording voice via Microphone / Yamaha ASIO)
Not had any of these issues with ANY previous version of Davinci.
Basically record some voice over, microphone records a few times. Then I re-do it (control Z to cancel the last recording, then push record again). After the third time I lose the ability to record audio - BUT the microphone audio still pushes the bar up and down (and you see the waveform actually move. After pushing stop, nothing.
Here is a video that might help to understand the problem(sorry for lack of audio):

IMHO- Problems like these should be ironed out at beta. I now cannot work as I have a fully edited file in 20, but needs the voiceover.

(this might be a double post as my previous reply didn't appear to take)
I'm having the same problem with Resolve 20.
Everything appears to work as expected - I can patch my inputs in Fairlight, enable tracks, hit record and see the waveforms appear. However, when I click Stop the waveforms vanish and the recorded audio files are empty.

I'm using an SSL12 audio interface and need multiple channels at low latency so I can't use the System Sounds option.

I've uninstalled 20 and reinstalled 19 and it's all working again - fool me for jumping on an upgrade too fast, I should know better.
There's definitely a problem with Fairlight in version 20.

I am having the same Problem. Using ASIO driver with SSL 2 audio interface. While recording, waveform is nicely visible. On pressing stop, it vanishes, leaving an empty recording. Please please fix this urgently... I upgraded my projects to 20 before noticing this.
Have a great day!

This is a pretty frustrating bug. I recorded a good bit with the waveform visible. But after I stop recording, it vanishes and leaves an empty file.

I/O Engine: ASIO
Device: Focusrite USB ASIO

I've learned my lesson…again. I'll wait for the x.1 or x.2 version from now on. But for now, I've upgraded my project to v20 and now I feel burned.
