Gaming Laptop to run Version 20 Studio

PostThu May 22, 2025 12:44 am

Hi All

I already have version 20 studio running on my desktop.

I have the opportunity to upgrade my laptop to a Stealth GS63 8RE
which is It's pretty much a rebranded MSI gaming laptop,
It's the Boxx MS-16K7 workstation laptop

Here are the specs
CPU: Core i7-8850H - RAM: 32GB - GPU: nVidia Quadro P3200 - Storage: 512GB m.2 SSD; 2TB HDD - OS: WIN 10 Pro
Screen; 15.6in 1080p 60Hz

I know this is within the specs needed, but do you think there could be issues? I know how picky Resolve can be. The Cuda issues etc.

It's an older machine but was used for 3d design and is very powerful.

I'd be paying about $800 for it.

I'm also ok just editing 1080 P on it possibly a bit of 4K

and try it with my Topaz Video Ai

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700 2.10 GHz
64.0 GB (63.7 GB usable) RAM
Windows 11 Home
RTX 3060 video card 12 gigs ram
RESOLVE VERSION 19.0.1 build 6

From what I understand Resolve 20 requires CUDA version 12. This, also from what I understand, requires at least versions 565 or 560 drivers for Windows or Linux. I've been looking into this today and a few times last few days and I'm really unsure of it myself.

For what it's worth, and I really know any of this for certain, but it looks like old GPUs cannot run these new versions of nVidia drivers/CUDA.

The informatfion seems pretty opaque and someone here will know better. But I'd definately hold off buying an oldish laptop to run the new resolve until you get some definitive information.

Looks like P3200 is GP107 Die, so rebadged GTX1070 with 6gb vram

I expect Topaz is built to use the RT cores of the RTX line? Will it even run without RT cores?

I had a GTX1060 machine and it was painful even for 1080p.

I would call 6gb vram the bare minimum for 1080p, but really would not get less than 8gb in 2025.
