RGB/Hex-Code Colors are wrong

PostWed Apr 19, 2023 7:07 am

Hi, I face the problem, that almost always when I use Hex-codes or RGB values in DR, the colors are far off.
This is a problem especially if I work with brand colors.
Is there a magic trick to it?

I work in either Resolve color management or in a Manual pipeline.
no matter what I do, the colors are off.

To further specify, I am talking about colors in Texts and/or fusion titles (lower thirds for names and so on) as well as photos or graphics like pngs.
Any help is Wellcome.

DaVinciResolve Studio
Manual Pipeline as follows:
DaVinci YRGB
Timeline color Space ACES (AP1) - ACEScct
Output Color Space Rec.709 - Rec.709-A

for my clips:
Group pre clip: ACES Transform
ACES 1.3
IDT FUJI Flog-2
ACEScct-CSC

group post clip: ACES Transform
ACES 1.3
ACEScct-CSC
ADX10-CSC

Timeline:
Kodak 2383 LUT provided by BM

Tried the following for the Text and graphics, but still looks wrong.

for my text or graphics:
clip: Aces Transform
ACES 1.3
sRGB
ADX10-CSC (also tried ACEScct-CSC and deactivated the lut at timeline level)

what am I doing wrong?

Tanks for your help.

A very compact answer:
1. You can't fully inverse a client color if there is a look on the timeline level.
2. ACES does inverse display but it's not completely perfect. There could be certain colors becoming slightly off
3. In Fusion display color data should be converted to Fusion's expected working space if you want the forward transform done by color management to inverse it again.
4. Rec.709 is not sRGB which client RGB codes typically are. The story of whether you should convert this or not for web deliveries is a big can of worms but I believe it makes sense to do so for broadcast...

For manual management, why not keep the look contained to the camera footage instead by having the entire look + ODT on the group or even place the ODT on the timeline as adjustment clip and place all graphics on top of that. The beauty of manual management is that you can work past the display transform for certain tasks.

Since you're doing a node based setup via groups you could apply the LUT to the post-group level instead of on the timeline. Then don't add graphics to those groups to leave them untreated.

Hey were you ever able to find a way around this? I too work with branded colors for clients and I’ve done so many tests and can never get the colour to be spot on, yet in a programme like Final Cut you just put in the hex code and it’s the exact same colour as on there website.

Hi!

I had the same issue with off colors and found a solution!

The solution for me was to go to background node in Fusion (I had a brand color behind the text) and then in the inspector I went down to Source Gamma Space -> Gamma Space -> chose sRGB -> ticked ok on Remove Curve.

As for color management settings on the project is YRGB Color Managed -> HRD -> SDR709

Hi Guys,
My solution is not perfect, but close enough. It works for timeline set to: Davinci Wide Gamut Intermediate

Add Color Space Transform Node just before Media Output.

Set it like that:

Input Color Space: REC709 (even though it should be sRGB)
Input Gamma: Linear
Output Gamut: Davinci Wide Gamut
Output Gamma: Linear (should be Intermediate, but Davinci alredy apply transformation to Intermediate after Media Out)

Tone Mapping: Davinci
Max input luminance: 100 nits
Max Output luminance 4000 nits (default, but if you set it diffrently in project settings, adjust)
Adaptation: 9 (default)

Gamut Mapping: None

Apply Inverse OOTF

Do not use Adaptive White Point (it lies in hue a little bit)

Hope it helped You, It took me weeks to find out this method.
