Using Clip "Freeze Frame" Issues

PostMon May 26, 2025 3:38 am

Hi team,

This bug has been around for years. I haven't reported it in the hope that someone else had and that it would be fixed. But alas, that's not the case so here I am.

I'm frequently creating software demo videos where the voice and demo file have been recorded separately. Often, the demo file is very quick and needs retiming to match the voiceover description.

So the way I do that is to use the retiming functions on the clip:
1. Right click - select "Retime Controls"
2. Click the drop down next to 100% and select "Freeze Frame".

This will add 2 speed points and pause the video at the point I need it to freeze. I can then adjust the length of those freeze frame as I need, no problem.

The issue I encounter if when I split a clip during a freeze frame portion. Any additional changes to the timing of that clip, resets the position of the first freeze frame.

After really looking into it, I noticed that what Resolve is doing is this:

1. When a clip is split during a freeze frame, there is no speed point visible at the start of that new clip. This is expected, since the start of the freeze frame is towards the end of the 1st clip, outside the left boundary of the 2nd clip.
2. But, when any further speed changes are performed on that 2nd clip (either adjusting the length of the 1st freeze frame, or adding a new freeze frame later in the clip or retiming the speed of that clip), Resolve moves the original 1st speed point (which is outside of the boundary of the 2nd clip, to the start of the 2nd clip.
3. The consequence: this slips all of the edits on the 2nd clip down the timeline and messes up any existing timing.

Here's a video showing it in action.

Of course there are workarounds, and I've dealt with it for years. So hopefully now that this bug has been raised, a proper solution can be found to help with editing speed and workflow.

Thanks team!
Mal
