Color page selected clip vs displayed clip

PostSat May 17, 2025 6:49 pm

I've asked for this before. Why, on the Color page, is the displayed clip often different from the selected clip when you have overlapping clips on the timeline. This makes no sense. I can't think of any rational for this behavior. When I'm on the color page, I'm trying to adjust the color of the image I see on my monitor, not blindly adjusting a selected, but not displayed, clip. Could someone explain why Resolve does this?

What I want is to be able to scroll through the timeline (on the Color Page) always keeping the selected clip the same as the clip that is being displayed. This can't be difficult.

Where clips overlap on different tracks a clip on the topmost track will take priority while the playhead is on any part of it. You can either make sure the playhead is only on the clip and track that you want, or you can disable tracks from showing by holding down Alt and clicking on the V number in the track header.

Click the Unmix button, left of the speaker icon, lower left of the Viewer.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Jim, thank you. I had missed the Unmix button and it can help in this situation. However, although it makes sure that I see what is selected, it still doesn't do what I want. I want the display and selection to be linked -- if is is displayed, it is selected. Then, as I scroll though the timeline, if I come across a displayed clip I don't like, I can just start correcting it without fooling around with track on/off or clicking on Unmix.

But it is working correctly.

I think you may have to change your "want" here and use Unmix when it's needed. ;)

(It seems to stay where we leave it between sessions, so...that's good.)

Yes, it is working as designed, which I don't happen to think is correct. This is not an implementation bug, but a design bug. There is no conceivable reason (at least I can't think of one -- can you?) for the displayed clip and the selected clip to be different on the Color Page. So I'm not going to change what I "want".

Actually, this is part of a major beef I have with DR -- the behavior of the playhead on the color page. I've posted before on this.

Yup. Lots of people agree with you. Looks like BMD doesn't. Though their policy is to not tell us anything like "here's why we think it's better this way" or engage in a discussion of such. Or even to say we agree with you but it's not a priority right now.

One of the main problems I have with this behavior is that when I scroll along the timeline and reach end of the top clip, the selection (and display) jumps to the next lower one (there is nowhere else to go), but when I move backwards (I'm using the scroll wheel on the Speed Editor) the displayed clip jumps back to the top clip, but the selected clip remains on the lower one (hidden by the top clip). This behavior is so non-intuitive that I can't seem to train myself to expect it.
