Davinci Resolve won't render anything successfully

PostFri Apr 11, 2025 1:55 am

Not more than a week or so ago, I used Resolve 19 for a couple projects and everything was perfectly fine. Now suddenly, regardless of what I try (more on that below), when I click render, the estimated time continues climbing endlessly and doesn't render. When I cancel, it basically freezes, and I have to just close out of Resolve.

Here's what I've tried in this order:

In Resolve 19.1.4 with Nvidia 572.83
In Resolve 20 with Nvidia 572.83
In Resolve 20 with Nvidia 572.16(clean install)
In Resolve 19.1.4 with Nvidia 572.16(clean install)

- created a new project, drag in a generated color bars to the timeline, go to deliver, click 1080p youtube preset, add to queue, render
- tried same thing using a different render preset
- tried saving the video file to different locations

I do have plenty (300gb) of free space on all my drives
I haven't changed any settings (cache, etc.) from the default install
No plugins

I have a log file, but I don't know if it's helpful since I can't generate the log file until I reopen Resolve.
htt ps:/ /drive. google. com/file/d/11yFtvVfSZnBvEnLS4c29hGcjih7t2rBY/view?usp=sharing

I literally cannot render anything in Resolve, even in a fresh install and a fresh project. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Is there any chance you're using imported media that has a variable frame rate? Phones, for example, can generate clips flagged this way. I've seen posts that variable frame rate clips can end up with individual frames showing "Media Offline", which I suspect would cause a render to fail.

I believe a workaround is to change the Clip Attributes for that media to a fixed frame rate.

Thanks for the ideas. I was originally using a clip imported from a sequence of frames, so no variable frame rate there. I thought maybe that could be an issue (never has been in the past, but you know, troubleshooting...), so like I mentioned in the post, the only thing in the timeline was a 10 Step Generator (or any other Generator - I tried a couple just because). So there isn't even any actual imported footage.

Update:
Still getting the same exact result with

Nvidia Studio 576.02 driver on both Resolve 19 and Resolve 20

I simply can't understand why I've had so many unreliability issues with Resolve across multiple machines and multiple OSs. I've been doing this stuff for 20+ years. I'm not saying I couldn't be missing something (which is why I'm here seeking help), but this is a really basic situation:

Resolve installed with default settings
Resolve installed on more-than-capable machine
Trying to render, literally, the simplest project possible, and trying to save the file to a very normal location where I save and work with files (and I've tried saving to several places)

I'm not having any issues with any other programs I use (Adobe (multiple), Blender, SketchUp, Unreal Engine, etc). I feel like I've tried every normal step I can think of. If someone thinks I did one of the steps incorrectly, please suggest what I should try. I'm looking for ideas here.

Holy crap, I just solved this.

I found this thread that I somehow hadn't found prior:
https://www.reddit.com/r/davinciresolve ... rk_render/

THE PROBLEM:
The problem was that my audio I/O settings were set to ASIO.

THE SOLUTION:
As soon as I set the Preferences > Video and Audio I/O > I/O Engine back to System Audio, everything worked perfectly.

The lowest hanging fruit to test is a Generator:
Make a new project, go to Edit, click Effects, click Titles, click Generators, drag the SMPTE Color Bar to the timeline, right click the SMPTE and select Compound Clip, Click Deliver, click Add, Click Render.

If that works, the non-rendering is somewhere in the project. In that case we need a DRP file.
If that does not work, we have a very interesting problem. Just to verify it not working, I would like a screen recording (OBS is fine) of what exactly happens.

Thanks for the input Mads. As mentioned previously, your suggestion was exactly what I was testing with. See the post right before yours for the solution.

I also add that I agree that it's a very interesting problem. I definitely think Resolve needs to throw an error for this problem, or at least a warning when the I/O is changed to ASIO. This was quite difficult to troubleshoot.

Great find! That’s a nasty bug in Resolve. Super hard for a user to find. This kind of thing should really be fixed in the next release IMHO.
