DaVinci Resolve Studio 20 Reference Manual?

PostWed May 28, 2025 4:02 pm

I click on Help and Reference Manual, but it gives me the version 19 reference manual.
When will the v 20 reference manual be published?

Sadly Black Magic has never seemed to prioritize documentation.

For V17 they never released a supported codecs document. Could you imagine selling any product and not being able to tell the customer what the product works on?

So I am not surprised.

For the training material, I understand not updating that with every release. V18 training is still worth while, maybe a few icons moved.

But for the actual manual, there is zero excuse. You know what the feature was going to do before you started to write the code to do it. And the person writing the code has way more work than the person writing the PDF manual.

There Are Only Two Companies Who Are Updating Their Product Guides To Match Their Latest Releases :
1. Avid
2. Apple

The Other Companies Choose To Host Their Updated Product Guides On Their Servers, Such As :
1. Adobe
2. CyberLink
3. Edius
4. Movavi
5. WonderShare

I downloaded the new features guide, and that was helpful. I guess, in combination with the v19 manual, it covers pretty much everything?

I believe the Resolve 20 manual is still being worked on, but my expectation is that it'll be out in the next 30-60 days. For now, if you read the New Features guide and the old Resolve 19.1 manual, that will get you through most of it.

If You Know How To Contact BMD, Please Tell Him\Them To Organize The Table of Contents Like The Way of Version 18 Training Manuals. Because, Beginners Guide To Video Editing (of v19) Was Very Horrible To Browse Using Its Messy Table of Contents.

In fairness, you can't finalize documentation until the software has been finalized. Otherwise the doc would show one screen shot, but oops, a developer had to make changes to it during the beta process so now they don't match. That creates a lot of churn for the tech writers.

One way of handling this would be to hold the public release until the code is locked down and the documentation is complete. Alternatively, you can get the release out as quickly as possible, which they did, and then update the docs after it's in the wild. I can see pros and cons for both approaches.

That said, I never upgrade to a .0 version of any software. Shortly following the public release of any version upgrade is the patch release that fixes a bunch of stuff that was discovered once a wider audience than the beta testers started using it. By the time the final documentation is out it will probably have been patched a couple of times, so that's my target for upgrading.

Sure, a part of me wants to play with new toys as soon as I see them, but life was good before 20 released, so life will remain good even I'm not on the latest and greatest version.

Frankly 20 beta has been the most solid beta I've used in any software. I've never seen it crash and I've played with stuff and used features the wrong way out of ignorance, but no crashes. Usually I can crash software easily by misusing a feature I don't understand. So IMHO, Resolve is very stable and the release even more so.
