How to handle Rec.709 Main10 video

PostSun Jun 01, 2025 11:41 am

So, I'm about to work on some Rec. 709 Main10 video.

I'm not doing any color grading, just cutting and adding effects. The input video is Rec. 709 Main10, and so will the output be.
How do I assure that the video is handled in 10-bit on the timeline, other than setting the timeline for 10-bit color, which I assume is just for monitoring, but actually doesn't affect the video, or what?

Do I need to set the project to DaVinci Wide Gamut, and do a CST from Rec. 709 to DaVinci Wide Gamut, DaVinci Intermediate, then back to Rec. 709 (without color grading), or is the footage automatically being treated as 10-bit video?

I believe that whatever the input, Resolve operates in 32bit. Then there is the choice for output bit depth on the deliver page.

I edit in colour managed, wide gamut intermediate for my GH6 Vog 10bit, GH5S Vlog 10 bit and AX100 rec709 HD 8bit. I often then output to h265 10bit or h264 8bit.

I think Fusion is always in 32-bit, but I'm not sure about the Edit page.

My understanding is that nearly all color correction math in Resolve is processed in 32 bit float.

Do be aware Resolve free on Windows does not support 10 bit h.264/5. It doesn't give you any error messages about this, so very confusing to new users.

So Use a mac or buy the $300 key.
