Resolve "hangs" when scrubbing

PostTue May 27, 2025 9:31 am

Hi there, I'm looking for some support.

I'm not a professional video editor; I'm running the free version of DaVinci Resolve on my gaming PC. For a long while, the software was working just fine, but it suddenly started misbehaving whenever I try scrubbing through my timeline. When I start the software for the first time each session, it plays nice, but as soon as I try to move more than a short distance away from where I'm currently working, everything breaks. The previews stop, I can't play anything back. Moving to another tab doesn't help, fusion just stops working altogether and the media bin stops displaying thumbnails at all. And switching to a different project doesn't help, the problem even persists between sessions unless I use Task Manager to kill the background process that Resolve leaves behind when closing.

I wondered if it might be due to having too much "stuff" on the timeline, but it doesn't explain why the problem suddenly started after having had no trouble at all previously, and it even happens if I open a very short project with only one or two tracks.

Any suggestions or advice would be welcomed and greatly appreciated. If there's anything I can clarify please just let me know.

First of all give us some details of your computer. What OS, GPU and it's driver version, and amount of RAM does it have? What version of Resolve are you using? What is the source of your video clips?
You can also post log and NFO files for a member of staff at BMD to look at. This is what to do for Windows computers.

Hi, thanks for responding so quickly. Here's some more system information:
Operating System: Windows 11 Home (version 24H2, OS Build 26100.4061)
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070, driver ver. 32.0.15.6094
RAM: 32GB
DaVinci Resolve version: 19.1.4 Build 11
When you say "source", do you mean where the files are saved? I have two hard drives on my computer, a Solid-State where I install software, and a Hard-Disk where I store data. This latter drive is where I have the media for my project.
I've uploaded the requested files to my Google Drive here: (I hope there's no sensitive information I have to redact)

That is not normal. Maybe focus on solving that?

Charles' questions are a good place to start.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Okay
It has stopped leaving behind a background process, for now. I don't know what I've done differently; I don't know what's changed. It's the inconsistency of it that frustrates me the most, how I'll get a different result from the same sequence of actions.
I have an animated background I made in Fusion that runs underneath the whole project, and while deactivating that track after the hang wouldn't cause it to fix itself, deactivating it before I do anything else does seem to prevent the hang, as long as I don't scrub too far too quickly. I'm also going to try splitting up the complete ~15-minute project into separate timelines for each chapter so that Resolve doesn't have to think about too much all at the same time.
So I think I have it going for now. But it's still annoying that the software was working fine for the longest time, and only suddenly stopped.

Today I tried going back to the project and it has the same issue even on loading. I wasn't able to even start with it. Loading a different project hasn't helped, the issue persists. Even on closing and re-opening the software. I tried restarting my computer, and when I first loaded the project it was fine, but then it just stopped working.
