Add flag to clip shortcut doesnt work for clip in Media Pool

PostTue Jul 10, 2018 9:38 pm

15b6
Win 10 Pro, x64

Ive assigned keyboard shortcuts for flags (F1 for Green, F2 for Red).
Clicking a clip in the timeline, and then hitting F1 adds a Green flag - as expected.

However, if I click a clip in the media pool (within the Edit page), and hit F1, no flag is added, but I do see a small busy icon for a fraction of a second, so something is being processed.

This may not be a bug - just a missing feature. When editing the timeline and browsing/skimming through clips, I often like to flag/tag the clips as I'm skimming through them - clips that are interesting, clips that are no good ( too much movement, bad focus etc). It would be really helpful if I could apply flags via the keyboard shortcuts to the clip selected (or the clip that has focus) within the media pool panel of the Edit Page.

I can right-click the clip, select Flags-->Green to add a flag, and that works fine - it would be nice if I didn't have to use the mouse to do this.

Ditto. Same problem here. It doesn't work at all in the media tab which would be nice also. It does seem like a bug.

I’m assuming you have the media pool in focus?

Does it work in the media pool in media page?

Trying to work my way around Resolve 16 but I too cannot get flags or color Markers to work in the Media Pool. It does work in the Cut module but you have to have loaded all your clips into the media pool first.
I'd like to just scan down my media in the source window in the Media module, mark the good clips then move only the good clips only into the media pool. Seems like an obvious first step. Has anyone figured this out please?

Ralph,
Resolve can only add flags to clips that exist in the media pool. Clips in the storage browser that have not been imported yet, can't have flags or clip colours or markers etc.

I did some testing and found the same issue that others report.
My conclusion is that Flag keyboard shortcuts work in the Media Pool only when set to the Media Pool section of the Keyboard Customise interface. They also need to be mapped to a key that is NOT in use, even if a modifier key is used such as Shift or Option (Mac). I agree that it is very confusing.

Thanks for your feedback. My workflow is to first quickly review each clip and colour code them in Finder (Mac). Then select all the Greens and drop them into the media pool. I hope the Davinci team will see how this could speed up workflow if it could be done in the Media Pool.

I think you will need to change your way of working. There's no way that any application can detect a color code done in the finder for a file. You have to do the flag within the program. My advice would be: quickly review the clip and color code them in Resolve, and then you can do what you want.

Marc,

I think the point is to be able to add flags in the media browsing area BEFORE they are imported into the media pool thus avoiding using the Finder to add colour tags.

I usually just import media to pre-made bins as I go through the clips in the Media Storage viewer. I would find previewing, adding flags and then importing to be no easier or quicker than importing as I preview, plus I end up with a nicely sorted bin structure as well.

Thanks Peter,
Its true u have to think differently in Resolve Marc. I'm so used to FCPX and having to wait ten minutes or so for hundreds of imported clips to go through an initial render process. In Resolve u just drop them in the a Bin inside Media and start right away reviewing, eliminating and sorting.

I have also created a Discard Bin with all the clips that are neither A or B which I will delete at the end of the Project. BRAW (I only shoot best quality) occupies a lot of space so by doing this I can minimize unnecessary achieving.

I like this way of working. Thanks all for your help.

My solution is: don't do that. Bring it in, add a flag, and then if you don't want it, delete it. It's a philosophical issue, not a technical issue.

Regarding shortcut behavior with flags in the Media Pool

PostWed Jun 04, 2025 6:43 pm

I'm not sure if this has already been addressed, but I encountered a strange issue. I assigned number keys 1–9 to different flag colors specifically within the Media Pool panel. I was aware of the potential conflict with the default multicam shortcuts, but I resolved those conflicts manually.

Despite that, the shortcuts did nothing — except that pressing the "2" key applied a yellow flag, which I hadn't even assigned.

Later, I tried assigning the same shortcuts through Mark > Add Flag > [Color], and they worked — but only when the "Live Media Preview" is selected, not the Media Pool panel itself. That behavior feels unintuitive, especially for someone like me who’s only been using Resolve for a couple of weeks. But that’s what I’ve experienced. So, flag shortcuts are now working — more or less — but only under those specific conditions.
