OOTF settings for VLOG to Davinci Wide Gamut

PostWed Jun 04, 2025 4:20 pm

I'm looking for some guidance on correct settings for whether or not I should be enabling inverse/forward OOTF when working with Panasonic V-Log footage in Resolve as I've struggled to find an exact answer online.

A few places have said that Resolve will handle this for you and to just trust its settings, but the issue is whether or not the box is checked seems to depend on whether I use the "Use timeline settings" (which my timeline settings are Davinci wide gamut/intermediate) or manually select davinci wide gamut/intermediate from the dropdowns.

For example on my input node, if I 'use timeline', it does enable Forward OOTF:

But then if I manually choose Davinci wide gamut/intermediate it disables it:

Similarly on the output node manually choosing DaVinci Wide Gamut/Intermediate to Rec.709 it does enable forward OOTF, but then using timeline settings it disables it.

My timeline settings ARE set to Davinci wide gamut/intermediate though:

If I on my output instead choose to convert from DWG/Intermediate back to V-Log/V-Gamut so that I can have a Phantom LUT as the final step after it, it disables the OOTF boxes which I assume is correct since they're both scene referred, but I'm quite confused as to the correct settings for V-Log to DWG and DWG to REC709 given as Resolve seems to behave differently depending on if you're pointing it to timeline settings or explicitly choosing DWG.

Can anyone advise on the correct setup here?

Is there a reason you want to use CST rather than project managed. I shoot with GH6 and GH5S both Vlog and set my project to Davinci Colour Managed, Intermediate Wide Gamut with monitoring rec709 2.4.

Bring media into the media page, right click and select Panasonic Vlog as the input color space.

Just edit and you now have the option to select anything for output by going back to the project setting and changing before you output. If you want to change anything on the color page you can remove that clip from the management and use cst's.

For the cast majority of users, leaving those decisions to Resolve is the wiser course. There are solid reasons that Resolve uses to set some values based on others you have set.

Unless you really know what you are doing and why, you're better off with Resolve's choices.

I second the suggestion from Jim - there are several settings you can easily do wrong with CSTs

like enabling tone mapping going to a bigger space, the OOTF settings, etc...

The only challenge I ever have with project color management is specific brand colors generated in Fusion. If that doesn't matter its a better solution imho.

When using CSTs its always better to specify instead of using timeline.

So, Vlog to DWG without OOTF and with tone mapping set to none will give you a 1-1 mapping.

Then from DWG to Rec709 with forward OOTF on along with Davinci or Luminance Mapping and Ideally Gamut Mapping.
(This is for standard 709).

Depending on what that Phantom LUT expects as an input you would do that instead of Rec709.
