Downgrading version 20 project to 19?

PostFri Jun 06, 2025 1:49 am

I am relatively new to Resolve, but I did have about 6 project under my belt on version 19, and the software was running pretty good on my windows 11 laptop with an i7 and only 16ram and 500ssd. Occasionally I would have some slowdowns when working with Fusion Comps, but not too bad.

However, I was sucked into the alure of new features available with version 20. I found a good YouTube tutorial about how to backup projects, so I felt pretty good about giving it a shot. The one part of the video where I had a brain fart was making a copy of a project so that if I needed to go back to 19, I could. Where I went wrong was instead of editing the Copy of my current project, I started editing the original. In other words, now both files are stuck on version 20.

After getting 20 up and running, I noticed very quickly, that my PC was not up to the task... The processor was humming within about 5 mins of opening my project, and I was not doing anything yet.

I tried making some settings changes to Optimized Media, and Render Cache but it was no use. Every time I did anything with a Fusion Comp that was not built in, it would only playback at about 3 to 5 frames per second until it finished rendering in place. I even made a comp that was just my MediaIN --> Blur --> MediaOut and that would play back at 5 fps.

Today I uninstalled 20 and reinstalled 19.1.4 build 11

I got my Project Library reloaded, and then realized that my current project, (both the copy and the original) were now version 20 only.

So, I said all that to say... what can be done to get my project back in 19? Even if I have to Upgrade to 20 and do something with my project (like Export it), and then Uninstall 20, reinstall 19 and Import the exported 20 project, and reopen it in 19.

O, I also plan on getting a 32gb Ram kit so that I should not have all the laggy issues in the future as well.

Thanks in advance for anyone that can offer a suggestion for the quickest way to resolve my issue.

Resolve projects are not backwards compatible. There is no way to take a Resolve 20 project back to 19.

Which is why we say in the Read More area of the Resolve 20 downloads area:

For DaVinci Resolve 20.0, we have taken efforts to keep the project libraries compatible with DaVinci Resolve 19.1.4. While this allows you to access the project library with 19.1.4, individual projects created or opened in 20.0 will no longer be accessible in 19.1.4. We recommend a full project library backup as well as individual project backups before opening projects in 20.0.

Thanks for your help, your statement jarred my memory.

Funny thing. ;)

I actually did both a Project Library backup (1st). As well as creating a copy of current Project madness I mentioned above.

So, I just found my Project Library backup and restored it, and now I see the original project prior to messing with it in version 20.

I'm back in business in version 19. 8-)

I also ordered the 32 GB ram upgrade. ;)
