Magic Mask bug when change video position

PostMon May 19, 2025 5:32 am

Hello,

when using the new magic mask on the color page to put a mask on an object - and then on the edit page change anything regarding the position of the video (X/Y, Zoom, angle…) the video/object dissapears.

When using the „old“ magic mask - then it‘s working.
Is there something like a workaround?

This is expected behavior, since you're changing the clip you tracked.

All you need to do is press the tracking button again, and it will retain all the masking you did previously.

Hello Sir,

thank you for your reply.
I tried to track again and it did not help - it´s moving the video IN the mask and not the mask itself.

As I said with the old magic mask everything is working so I think something must be wrong here ?

I just made a video to let you see what I mean exactly. Also I forgot to mention that im doing the mask on a "freezed frame" so the should be no tracking needed I think ?

In the first part of the video i add the new magic mask which don´t work.
At the end im doing the same with old magic mask and its working.

Here the video:

Thank you

The mask demonstrably gets messed up whether it’s 2 or 1 from what I can see.

Because of this, I don’t mask first, I move my subject first. In order to do this, turn down the opacity on your subject clip to 50%. Move it to where you want, including key frames. Make sure to turn the opacity back up to 100% when finalizing the key frames. Then do your masking.

Thank you for your reply again!

True, the mask always get´s messed up.. doesn´t matter if its the new or old magic mask
The thing is - with Magic Mask 1 it just looks like it´s messed up but it's only a visual bug - If you turn ON/OFF the Transform section in inspector on the edit page - the video/mask will be shown as it should be.
This problem also has been in Davinci 19 - but with this workaround you can at least work with it.
With Magic Mask 2 it´s not just a visual problem, it´s a problem with the mask itself - so that workaround is not working.

I also tried your suggestion with keyframe the video and mask it after:
Its working with Magic Mask 1, but not with Magic Mask 2...

I think there´a general problem with the Magic Mask 2:
I tried many things now to get it work but everything I tried didn't solve the problem.
So my theory is that as soon you have any keyframes on your video on which you apply the magic mask 2 - it will NOT work.

Hmm I haven't run into this problem so far, but I will try to recreate it and see if I can find a fix. Sorry for the late reply!

You don‘t have to be sorry, thank you for the reply anyway!

I‘m wondering about if i‘m the only one facing these problems, a friend of me which also using Davinci got the same problem and has no workaround.

Best regards

I just experienced a similar issue. I masked and tracked the subject and then went to scale it for positioning behind another subject. The second I would touch any of the transform tools the whole magic masked video clip would go blank and be solid black. Couldn't undo or anything, if I tried ctrl-z it would undo what was all previous to the transform attempt yet video would still be black and unusable.
