Canon .CMR RAW files work with Davinci Resolve Ipad???

PostThu Jun 12, 2025 12:45 am

Ok so I have a M4 13'' iPad Pro and I've been loving my workflow with ProRes footage from my Fuji, however I recently picked up a 1DXiii and trying to edit the .CRM 5.5k RAW canon footage with zero luck. I have the paid iPad version and when I import the footage I can select the color space and options as Canon Cinima and see the RAW editing menus however the footage is just black with white outlines.

I shot with an R5C before and I can't remember if I tested the 8k RAW LT from that camera or not on my ipad... I want to say I did but not sure maybe it's a slightly different RAW codec. I know the 1DXiii and the C200 shoot the same RAW.

I do have a workaround though as I can transcode them on my PC in Adobe Media Encoder to say ProRes 422 or whatever flavor of ProRes and it will edit and grade pretty nicely. I still "I think" get the Clog 2 out of it but there is no way to really tell. I can make some adjustments and the footage looks great, just don't have the true RAW capabilities..

Thanks for any help as I'm new to this forum

The iPad version doesn't support any RAW format other than BRAW.

It’s is a weird bug in the iPad version that it is possible to select Canon Raw just below Blackmagic Raw in the Raw Profile dropdown on the Camera Raw settings tab but it does nothing. It’s presumably a carryover when they ported the desktop version to iPad. It’s of no consequence as it does nothing but it’s sloppy and,as there is no documentation for the iPad version, it’s not possible to tell if it was intended to include Canon Raw but clearly it wasn’t. I can see how a Canon Raw shooter would be disappointed/confused because of it being selectable.

It should be removed or better BMD should implement the ability to use other raw codecs in the iPad version. I shoot Nikon Raw and that doesn’t appear in the dropdown list as the list is alphabetical so no confusion. The workaround of using a computer to decode to ProRes is pretty useless if one is on the road without access to a computer. The reason I bought an iPad Pro was to lighten the load on the road. Carrying a laptop as well would completely negate that. Unfortunately it seems to me that after the great fanfare that accompanied the release of Resolve for iPad, there has been a serious lack of time and effort put into improving it as a standalone mobile app for iPad. As it stands, it is of very limited use without a keyboard as the interface design is really lacking in standard touch features necessary for efficient standalone use.

It might be due to the fact that Apple's Compressor is capable of reading CRW, next to ProRes RAW (and nothing else). Maybe a version for iPad is in the works?

Exactly too, yeah when I’m at home I can transcode the footage, but then it’s useless if I’m traveling. Although, usually I will shoot and edit after a trip. I want to shoot in the 5.5k mainly to have flexibility in a 4k timeline.

I wish Black magic would give more effort to the iPad version, the new iPads can handle the footage it just needs codec support. Let’s go Davinci! Give me an update and have more support for the app on the website.

It's disappointing that even version 20 for the iPad is not complete yet.
