DR 20 Use vertical resolution changes workspace layout

Just upgraded to da Vinci resolve 20 and I'm having a couple hours now getting my desktops workspace layout resituated what a pain...

Anyways if you use vertical resolution it totally takes control of the desktop layout and it's terrible. I usually keep my effects below the media pool and I can't do that and then on the color page it takes control of that. I would like that to remain the same always my workspace should remain the same whether I have a horizontal layout or a vertical layout. Basically the expand and shrink button in the top left corner is grayed out.

Also every time I go into my projects the layout I just spent all the time setting up is no longer there. I've reset the layout i've redone it so many times I'm saving the layout and again the effects is not there and not where I put it the color page is not set up. These are kind of some of the most important things I would think?

You can uncheck the option for Vertical layouts under Preferences>User>UI Settings...

I don't want to uncheck that I need that on. I just don't want it to change my desktop layout, now the way it does in DR 20. In DR19 I used to be able to switch to all of my different profiles and have the same desktop layout that's not the case anymore. DR 20 is not saving my layout at all and it changes between each profile I want it to be the same across all of my profiles like it used to be and I wanted to save my layout the way it used too.

Why do you need that setting to be on when you're customizing the layout for your usage?

Turn that off and customize the layout as you want.

Yeah I tried all that I customized everything and as soon as I turned that setting back on it changes it all.

You still haven't said *why* you need that turned on.

If you're customizing the interface, leave it off.

I post a lot of shorts on my YouTube channel. I don't know why I need to explain why I need that on I should be able to do both I was able to do both in 18 and 19, again I just don't need the desktop displayed a change when I go to vertical. And I still don't know why none of my profiles save my desktop after I spend all the time to set it up each time I go back in and it's gone I have to reset it up every single time. I know it's a new version I'm sure it will be fixed and updates to come. That's why I'm here pointing it out.

As an " IT Pro" you should have experience with users that want a particular thing without fully understanding why they think they need that very particular thing.

Giving others an understanding of why you want automatic layout and custom layout somehow at the same time would help us suggest other ways to accomplish what you're after, if there are suggestions to be made.

I'm not asking for anything that wasn't there before. I'm just wondering why it went away?

I'm sure I'll get used to the new way I don't have any choice. And it looks like I have to set up my desktop each time I go into it because it doesn't remember anymore, so sad. I'm not trying to argue about this I'm just telling you the new way is terrible for me. Before I could set up my desktop and it was the same across all my profiles now it doesn't remember anything I set up in each profile is 100% different it's so unproductive for me.... I hate it I'm gonna go back to 19. All is good no worries I was just trying to report the fact that I can completely customize my desktop the way I want it to be it does not remember it. I save it in my profile I save it in the project and none of it's remembered.

I don't need all the AI stuff and I don't need all the cloud stuff I like a bunch of the other improvements but I don't need it to mess with my workspace my workspace should be able to stay the same and it doesn't and I can't save my workspace so that's the worst. If I can't save my workspace in my workspace is not the same across all my profiles and I have to reset it up every time and then when I use horizontal workspace it's totally crazy that's no good for me I don't know how that I can explain it anymore it's just not working out.

I don't know maybe the things I'm mentioning are bugs for the new version?

I keep setting up my desktop profile and it's not saved regardless of how many times I save it I have to redo it I spent hours redoing it over and over and over for edit for color for everything and none of it's ever saved I have to continually redo it. And then like I said in the vertical profile it's just hosed it's not the way I want it to be and I have no control over it.

Those are contradictory statements. The whole point of that check box is to change your layout.

Profile? Do you mean Layout Presets, or something else?

Sorry projects. I have about six saved projects that I open up to do different things. For example a plane 1080P 60 PFPS with some stuff already there. A 4K, 59 FPS, a virtical, etc... Not profiles that's my bad. I only use one profile desktop profile that I save and that I want it to go through every 1 of the projects and be the same on all my projects and it's not working like that anymore in version 20. And especially on the vertical setup.

In vertical layout shrink and expand button is grayed out it doesn't allow me to put my effects below the master panel that's a bug to me in version 20. And when I go into the color screen viewing areas no longer in the middle it throws it off to the side and jacks up the entire layout of the color screen. And worst off once I use this project and go into any of my other projects the profile is all messed up on all of them because of this bug in DR 20 for vertical videos. (see pictures)

So pictures below show what I'm talking about for a regular horizontal layout. The one edit layout I want is the way 19 used to carry the desktop through everything it was that way on all of my projects.

And now when I open any vertical project it resets the edit layout to this On all of my projects every single one of them I have to reset the mall all over again and I save them I do everything but if I open up one of my vertical projects it resets everything on all my projects. And I hate the way the vertical layout is I can't work with it like that.

Correct. That's just how Vertical works. (For now. Things may change in the future.)

I don't know what that means. (There is no "desktop" inside of Resolve.)

Yeah, I'm not sure about the type o there sorry. i'm just saying I used to have one desktop layout and it used to carry through every project I did in da Vinci redissolve and that's no longer the case in DR 20 and it's very frustrating.

Man, this is driving me nuts—I’m seriously considering going back to DR 19. I do a lot of work with vertical videos, and this new layout is a nightmare. It won’t let me move my effects, I can’t center the vertical frame, and every time I open this layout, it resets all my Horizontal desktop settings. It’s completely insane. Why on earth would you remove essential functions and literally break the separation between desktop projects? This is beyond frustrating.

My thought? The OP didn't understand Jim's suggestion.

Additional explanation:
There is a new option in v20 under Preferences>User>UI Settings that is enabled by default. This preference (when enabled) will automatically rearrange your layout when it detects a timeline with vertical video enabled. In order to get the v19 behaviour the OP desires, this new option must be disabled (unchecked).
