VTR Offline

PostThu Jun 12, 2025 2:31 pm

Hello friends!

So i am trying to use Resolve to capture some old videos from mini DV tapes. My configuration is like this:

Canon HV20 miniDV camcorder -> UltraStudio Recorder 3G -> Resolve Studio v20

The issue is that I am getting a VTR Offline message on my video capture tab in the media pool:

The UltraStudio shows up in the I/O Resolve prefs:

As well as in my latest version of Desktop Video Setup:

However I can see the source input in the Media Express app. The issue there is that it has a very clunky way of capturing, plus the audio gets unsynced after a while.

Do you have any advice on getting this workflow to work in Resolve?

Thank you,
Gabi

Resolve supports Sony RS-422 protocol. Unlikely it will work with your Canon deck.

I would suggest you just use the Capture Now button and roll the VTR manually.

Thanks for the reply, Dwain!

I'm getting this error even before clicking on Capture Now:

That implies that the Project Settings - Capture and Playback - Deck Settings - Video Capture and Playback setting does not match your incoming video. Also make sure the SDI config is set to Single Link.

And are you feeding SDI or HDMI to the UltraStudio Recorder 3G? Resolve only supports SDI capture.

But if you are using the HDMI input, you can force that to work by using the Desktop Video Setup app to select HDMI input. Then Resolve should see it.

Once the Capture and Playback settings are correct, you should see video in the Media page viewer as soon as you select the Capture icon.

THANK YOU, Dwaine!

It worked! The Desktop Video Setup automatically selects the HDMI connection I have.

So, I matched what the Desktop Video Setup was showing me (NTSC) in the video capture and playback settings and all of a sudden it started working. The camera I am using is capable of playing back 1080i59.94 but the actual recorded source on the tape is a 720x486 29.29 fps:

Thanks again for the help!
