How to rename a timeline in DaVinci 15?

PostWed Nov 28, 2018 10:27 am

(Sorry, I assume the answer is obvious and I'm just stupid, but have spent over an hour in menus and Google and searches of the Blackmagic Forum and documentation first)

I have "Timeline 1". I want to call it something else. My understanding is that it is stored in the database, not the Mac OS file system. So my expectation is that there should be some means to set the name of the timeline. But the only place I can find any sort of timeline naming freedom is when creating a *new* timeline.

Does everyone just suffer along with "Timeline 1" once they've been dumb enough to spend energy editing it? Why does it seem that nobody else has this problem?

Wow. Thanks! I guess I would vote for making that slightly more obvious, but such is the price of being a newbie.

I agree BMD should make things more obvious. They like to be stealthy with functions.

It works the same as file naming has worked in Windows and MacOS since.... forever. Not exactly obscure.

Now in DaVinci 16 right click rename option on the tabs would be nice and much faster ;-)

I've worked out through experimentation that to rename Timelines and clips you need to:
Ctrl-click any number of clip/timelines but not folders
Ctrl-click one of the clips/timelines you've previously selected, which then allows you to edit names amongst those selected.

This means that you need to have at least 2 clips/timelines in your bin to rename things.

No popup menu required. Just click on the NAME in the Media Pool to select for renaming, as mentioned in this thread! Just like renaming in the operating system.

Almost like the OS. Click once to select. A second click in any text field of a selected clip will put that field into edit mode.

In the OS it’s usually click and then click again in 1-2 seconds. In Resolve there’s no time limit. Once it’s selected a second click puts the field in edit mode.

There’s also no way to double-click a clip when you’re over an editable field. The second click puts it in edit mode.

This is a real pain imho but it’s been that way “forever.” I’ve submitted feature requests to change these to match what OSes do but so far no luck.

It's irritating that in some modes, you can just click into the field and rename it... but in other modes, you have to right-click and select RENAME. I wish that was more consistent.

Yup that’s another thing.

There are even a small number of text fields where copy paste shortcuts don’t work and you’ve got to use the context menu.

Your image doesn't look like the right click menu for a timeline.

Where do you click on it?

I'm in the master and only this context menu appears:

Max, as already explained, in v20 the popup menu option has been replaced by the ability to rename your timeline directly in the Media Pool without calling up a separate 'Rename' dialog ... with the timeline item selected in the Media Pool, simply just click on its label and the label itself will become a text edit field.

Another way, if you use the 'Stacked Timelines' display option, you can rename your timeline directly in the Timeline window by right-clicking on its timeline tab and choosing 'Rename Timeline'.

In the bin.

You sure you're in version 20? I couldn't find the menu you show no matter where I click.
