Random noise after CPU upgrade

PostTue Jun 17, 2025 3:13 pm

Hi there, DR users and BM team!
I have recently updated my PC processor and updating bios - these might be valid here. PC runs smoothly, I've stress tested it for full day and there was no problems of any sort.
But when I've fired up Resolve Studio, I've started to experience short bursts of white noise in random moments during playback. My first guess was: a corrupted file, but when I've moved the playhead to the place when white noise occured, it dissapeared and appeared somewhere else. I have obviously checked the sample rate etc., it was correct. Well, my second tought was: as long as it doesn't occur in render, I'm fine.
But guess what!
It does appear in render, in other, random places.
I have tried old projects - same thing.

So my second tought was: ok, it's time to update to Resolve 20. Maybe it will help. Since I'm working with my customers videos that are time sensitive, I can't work on beta and pray to work out fine, so I update my Resolve quite late. After update - same thing. White noise in random places in final render.

So, my guess is, it's the processor update caused this. But how do I get rid of it?

Assuming you've stress tested the CPU (with prime95 for instance) before using it in Davinci, I think we need the logs as per the FAQ (to rule out a Davinci bug), video recording or Delivered video showing the sound.

I'd be very surprised if it turns out to be a CPU error, I think there's lots of other things before we jump to that conclusion.

Hi there,
I have read the FAQ and I haven't found the log part, but I assume that you need the diagnostic log. I have also exported short video, around 0:20 there is the audio issue clear as day.

All the files are here:

That is super weird.

It has white noise qualities that are very visible on a spectrogram (in audacity for instance).

I am at a loss for what to do:
If you are absolutely 100% sure there's nothing wrong with the source file, then it's either a Davinci bug or a hardware bug.
Based on the sound process (cpu to program to writing the file), I would verify that the file works on another computer (to rule out the cpu, or if exactly the same thing happens, it's a Davinci bug or input file error)

If you can force the same error with other files (but not with the same other files on other computers) then it's your cpu.

Sorry for not being more "this is what's wrong" :(

Thanks, so what can I do to prevent that? I upgraded this PC specifically to do video renders using Resolve, so I'm in a weird place right now. We're talking about Ryzen 9 5950x if it helps with anything.
Maybe repairing windows files? Full system reinstallation? I would appreciate any help

Little update in the topic: I have checked the windows files, updated Resolve to the new version, and discovered that this issue occurs only in Resolve and only when using audio effects. But it's still there, and I don't know what to do.

Edit:
It strucked me after writing this post. One of the VST plugins that I use, adds such noise if you don't have valid licence. I have checked that and bingo: my licence key was not entered. I feel so stupid now...

I doubt this could be the CPU, your system would crash before you get corruption on content! Nevertheless, running some stress test might be a good idea. A few cycles of Cinebench would do.

It's not the same thing but when I have "artefacts" on screen it's always a licensing issue. I close Resolve and open it again and it'll ask me to enter the licence again. Once that's done, the artefacts are gone.

Do you have the noise on exported media too? Just trying to rule out the sound interface.

I'm shooting int he dark here but did you update AMD drivers?

Thanks for the reply, I have updated my last post. It was a VST licence problem, after entering my licence key, it just vanished

that's an excellent way to remind someone that they're using unlicensed SW! :)

Glad you sorted it! Thanks for the update!
