My old videos vs davinci, please help me

PostMon Nov 03, 2025 10:05 am

Hello everyone, I'm new here, as I downloaded DaVinci Resolve yesterday.

Please excuse my English if it's a bit rough; I don't speak it very well, and this is a Google translation from French (yeah la baguette, le fromage, Macron démission and all the stuff)

I've been trying to import videos into the software for three hours now, without success, and since it's somewhat urgent (I can explain if you'd like), I'm asking for your help!
I'm making a visualizer for one of my songs with various formats, and while I can import the most recent videos just fine, the older ones don't. It doesn't display any error messages; it just won't import them. These are videos I filmed about fifteen years ago with one of the first pocket cameras, the "Vado HD." Here's what they look like:
ID: 0
Format: AVC
Format/Info: Advanced Video Codec
Format Profile: Main@L4
Format Settings: CABAC / 1 Ref Frames
Format Settings, CABAC: Yes
Format Settings, Ref Frames: 1 frame
Format Settings, GOP: M=1, N=5
Codec ID: H264
Duration: 46.600 ms
Bitrate: 4149 kb/s
Width: 1280 pixels
Height: 720 pixels
Aspect Ratio: 16:9
Frames Per Second: 30,000 fps
Color Space: YUV
Chroma Subsampling: 4:2:0
Color Depth: 8 bits
Scan Type: Progressive
Bits/(Pixel*Frame): 0.150
Stream size: 23.0 MB (96%)

Audio
ID: 1
Format: ADPCM
Codec ID: 2
Duration: 46 s 631 ms
Bitrate Type: Constant
Bitrate: 176.4 kb/s
Channels: 1 channel
Sampling Rate: 44.1 kHz
Color Depth: 4 bits
Stream Size: 1010 KB (4%)
Nesting, Duration: 46 ms (1.38 video frames)

And my computer:
AMD Ryzen 5 5600H processor with Radeon Graphics (3.30 GHz)
Installed RAM: 16.0 GB (15.3 GB usable)
System type: 64-bit operating system, x64 processor

I've tried changing the video format to MP4 and MOV, but it's still not working. I've also tried adjusting the project settings, specifically the frame rate and resolution, but nothing has changed. What's puzzling me is that my other videos work perfectly. Do you have any thoughts on this?

Thank youuu !

Okay, let's say it's resolved, at least partially. I kept searching and managed to fix it by re-exporting one of the old videos to another editing program (in m2ts, but I don't think it's a format issue). I don't know why it works this time, but it's a viable solution for me. I just need to take the time to do this with each video I need. I'll leave this thread as unresolved for a while to see if anyone has a better solution If it's okay with the moderation, And then I'll close it.… Thanks for reading!

Hello,
Answering from Paris :-)
Your clips are paying with VLC ?
If yes, You can try to transcode it to a more friendly codec, like prores, Mp4 or other, with Shutter Encoder (free and french).
If that easier for you, we can communicate in french.
And you can send me little example of your files.
All the best,
Jacques

Mmm, how are you trying to change the file to .mov or .mp4?
Are you just renaming it, or did you use some software to rewrap it?
And what’s your original container? Maybe .mts from old cameras or photo cams? (My old Panasonic does that.)

Are you working on Windows or Mac?
As Jacques suggested, you could easily convert the file with Handbrake. If you only need to rewrap it, you can use a tool like MP4Toolbox (free for single files) on Mac, though there are many similar tools for Windows.

P.S. Please excuse my English—I’m Italian ;-)

Hi Jacques,
Thanks for your reply.
I'll continue in English in case the topic interests others.

Yes, these videos play normally in VLC. However, on the timeline of my old editing software, these videos were playable but had major glitches, strange, jerky movements that I found quite cool and probably impossible to reproduce with effects (as far as I know). Then, upon export, everything went back to normal, much to my disappointment

Thanks for the advice about the codec. Since it was AVC, I figured the problem wasn't there, but I can try changing it :)

Hi Carlo,
I tried it in mp4 and mov formats, but it was just a matter of changing the name. It's worth trying using software.

I'm not sure about the original format, because the files I have might be a copy I made back then, I don't remember, but the one i have now is in avi format.

I'm working on Windows, i should have reported it.

I have a question for you : I see that your real name doesn't appear on your profile (even though your username might be your real name). Is that because you didn't provide it initially, or is there a way to remove it later? (I looked a bit but couldn't find it.)

Thank you for replying !

If you're interested, Jacques and Carlo, i'll post the video link here when it's online :)

Hi Jérémie,

No — just renaming the file won’t change the container. If the container is the issue, renaming doesn’t fix anything. It’s like looking at a box and simply calling it a sphere — it’s still a box for everyone else.

Rewrapping is an actual process that changes the file header and footer so it can be recognized correctly. In many cases software only needs the file to be rewrapped to work properly.

If you upload a short sample of your video, we can check if it’s just a container issue. If it is, you can use Shutter Encoder as Jacques suggested to rewrap the file.

Regarding my name — yes, the account uses my real name, but I don’t know why it doesn’t show publicly. I checked my settings but I don’t have that option available. Maybe Blackmagic introduced it after I joined the forum years ago, when I was dealing with trolls, and older accounts never got that update.

M2TS is a very bad format for editing -- you'll need to convert it to H.264 or something like that with Handbrake first. M2TS is mainly used to make Blu-ray discs. True, some camcorders use it, but (again) it's a very bad format for post.
