Laptop versus Tower Generic PCs?

PostMon Apr 30, 2018 7:34 pm

Hi, is there any significant advantage today of getting a tower PC versus a laptop for Davinci resolve 15 running on Windows?
Maybe having multi GPU on a tower will improve performance greatly? But do we really need muti GPU for smooth playback in a project with a couple of VFX and color grading in prores HQ?

I m on a budget between $2500 and $3000 and I'm not sure which way to go, laptop or Tower Generic PCs.

Any advice greatly apreciated.

Thanks

It all depends on your priorities.

A new XPS 15 could do what you need it to if your top priority is portability. If that isn't a big priority though, and you want the flexibility to upgrade over time, then building a desktop (or in the current climate with miners putting graphics cards at a crazy premium - buying a prebuilt) would make more sense. Especially if you're not using a NAS or SAN for storage.
