Help! Resolve project will no longer open at all!

PostSun Apr 29, 2018 5:32 am

I have a project I was working on in Resolve and started experimenting with the Fusion page and some 3D text. I was in the Resolve page, playing back the fusion clip and Resolve crashed. Since then, every time I try to open my project Resolve crashes! Now I am completely locked out of my project! And tomorrow was the one day this week I am able to spend all day on it :(

Things Ive tried all unsuccessfully, all with crashes when opening the project:
- Exporting a .DRP and re-importing it into a new database
- Applying different project settings to the project and opening it
- Tried various GPU settings, CUDA, OpenCL. Disconnected the eGPU entirely (still crashes)
- Ensured CUDA drivers are up to date, which they are. But it appears not to be a GPU issue.
- Checked Always Run Fusion on CPU
- Tried Opening an exported .drp in Resolve 14 (incompatible)
- Tried opening Resolve with Administrator Priviledges
- Upgraded to High Sierra (Didnt work, so Downgraded back to 10.12.16)
- Tried opening the .drp on a fully loaded 12-core MacPro (2013) running 15b2
- Tried downgrading to 15b2 and opening the .drp (crashed immediately after loading project)

Im thinking a big part of the problem is that it crashed with the playhead on the problematic fusion clip. So now everytime it tries to open, it tries to play that effect and crashes. Please! Any help is much appreciated! Being completely locked out of my project is a huge pain.

Ran Resolve as Administrator in MacOS per someone's suggestion. Still crashes but here is the process output:

Peter, since I am unable to load my project, I am unable to access the help menu and create the diagnostic logs from within the project. The only way to do this was to open up a new (empty) project and then create the logs. I dont know if that helps or not but thats all Im able to do. I also included the .drp file in the .zip file here http://www.lmn.org/temp/DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20180429-214426_w_DRP.zip

I would really REALLY appreciate any solutions or help you guys can offer, asap, as I am totally locked out of my project. Definitely learned my lesson not to touch the Fusion page. But the rest of the app has been working pretty well.

i have a regular routine,
duplicate a timeline, say "DQY_v017" and rename to "DQY_v018"
create a DRP of DQY_v017, i often add a note like "DQY_v018_reel3 tweaks"
in project manager rename DQY_v017 project to DQY_ v018

go back to work in v18.. i do this several times a day, and even more when it's beta software, it takes around 90 seconds to do this routine, if/when it's needed it will save hours of pain....

Thee project does not open.

1) see if you can make a copy of the project
2) if so contact bm and see if they can open it
3) in the main database window, thete should be a "optimize" function: run it against the copy. See if solve it.

Done all of the above. BMD has the logs and the .DRP. Or at least a link to it. Because this is a disk database there is no optimize function that Im aware of. I did however create a PostgreSQL database , imported the project and optimized it but it still crashed.

No. I was not able to save it or do anything after the issue arose. Cannot get into the project to at all -- either to re-save it or do anything else.

Note: If you are unable to restart Resolve successfully, logs can be manually captured to the desktop by referring to this thread.

I was able to export the logs. Did you see the link? I was told exporting the logs from a new empty project was sufficient. The link is below right after your previous comment.

Thanks for the help!

ahhh, too late for this go-around, but for wot it's worth, with a beta software i make DRP's every hour or two, with release software a couple of times a day

never been bit (yet)

have had to step back to the last good DRP more than a few times tho ;-)

How to stop auto-open of last project

viewtopic.php?f=32&t=72036&view=unread#unread

To disable autoload of last project, you can change the parameter <AutoReloadPrevProj> from "true" to "false" in the file (currently line 20)

PC: "C:\ProgramData\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Preferences\config.user.xml".

MAC: "/Library/Preferences/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/config.user.xml"

I had a similar problem, having done some messing about with macros in Fusion.

I exported the project then opened it in BBEdit and deleted the offending timeline to get the rest of the project back. Took a bit of work to figure out which the timeline was!

Oh yes, definitely wont make that mistake again. I got my backup drive going and will be making DRPs regularly. And try to get the auto backups feature working -- but thats another story.

I was wondering how to turn that off. Thanks. Unfortunately it wont help me in this situation, as it is the project itself that is crashing Resolve. Im able to get to the project manager, I just cant then load the project without it crashing.

If you export a .drp you can open it in a text editor (I used BBEdit) and access the folders & xmls within it.

There’s something like ‘sequence.xml’ that contains the timelines, one of which will be causing the crash.

I only had 3 timelines, and got lucky with the first one I removed - so could then import & Open that .drp.

With more timelines I’d have divided to conquer (divide timelines in two drps and find which half is still crashing, repeat)

Or tried to figure out how to identify timelines in the xml.

This is where an auto save ‘attic’ would be useful, and maybe already exists?

Thanks. Good suggestion. I gave it a try but Im not sure where to find the timelines in the .DRP? Ive got BBEdit. Opened the "project.xml" but not sure where they are in there?

Got it! Thats HUGE progress! Thanks Trevor! I saw the reference to "current sequence" in the "project.xml" and it was set to "1" so I just changed it to "2" and now Im able to get back into the project! I am in my string out sequence. Problem is, when I try to open the sequence that contains my project, Resolve crashes again. So I exported an XML of the sequence, and re-imported it into a new project and that worked. Now Ive got access to my edit again! Halalujah! Thanks a ton!
