Help! 8 Audio track output shows up as 16.

PostFri May 04, 2018 3:49 am

Hi everyone, So I'm dealing with an issue uploading to Amazon. I exported 8 mono tracks as they requested 5.1 (channels 1-6) + Stereo (channels 7-8) but they rejected the file saying that there's 16 channels. This doesn't make sense on my end because the final file shows 8 channels in Resolve under the metadata window and on Quicktime for that matter.

Here's a little bit about the project: there's only 8 mono tracks in the sequence and on the delivery page I selected the 'output track #' option and selected timeline tracks 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and they all say mono next to them. Again, once the file is rendered out, it shows as 8 channels in Resolve (and quicktime). Can anyone help with this? Why would amazon be seeing 16 channels when the Resolve metadata window says 8?

Other info: I'm on Resolve 14.3 w/ Mac OS Sierra 10.12.6

Is it possible that your sequence was set to stereo tracks? That is the DaVinci default and if you didn't change it to mono tracks, even though your source media was mono it would still output stereo tracks resulting in 8 stereo tracks, (hence 16 tracks).

Not sure if this is the case but it certainly seems plausible.

Hey Nathan, thanks for the reply. The sequence tracks are definitely set to mono. :-/

Hard to guess what else it could be. If you wanted to render out a small section and upload here I would be happy to look at the file.

Talked to Blackmagic support on the phone (very helpful and informative) and they recommended getting a new sub-mixed single track of the 5.1 mix vs 6 individual tracks and a single track of the stereo vs 2 individual tracks and try the export that way. Still weird that amazon was interpreting the 8 channels as 16 but this will cut down on the margin of interpretation by having just 2 tracks sub-mixed (only 5.1+2.0) vs 8 tracks (L,R,C,LFE,Ls,Rs + L, R). :D

My only word of caution would be that most networks/online services will not accept delivery if your audio is formatted that way.

That being said I have not personally delivered to Amazon and thier specs may be different then the other networks / online platforms.
